3rd Dermoid same ovary

Hi I just turned 25 years old, I am getting ready for my 3rd surgery.  I had surgery August 2005 and September 2006 to remove dermoids both times. The little rascal is back again bigger than ever in my freshly cut ovary that doesn't have much left.  They are finally going to remove the ovary all together this time around.  I was down for 4 weeks with the second surgery before being able to return to work about double the time of the first surgery.  I was just wondering if anyone could help me with what to expect with the ovary removal?  Just sounds like there should be some sort of hormonal issues for awhile or does your body correct itself pretty fast? I wasn't sure with the only 4 months between the surgery what kind of an effect that has on the recovery.  Any help you have would be great!

Thanks
Jessy

Hi guys,

I was recently told that I have a dermoid tumor on my ovary and I'm starting to experience some pain with it.  I'm hoping to have it removed as soon as possible, but wanted to ask if you have all had to have your ovary removed.  Is that standard with this surgery?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks,

Karin

Yes mine had hair and teeth!!! I saw a picture and was freaked out!!!! It is really a strange tumor...

I had a 3" incision above my right hip with the last one and that thing hurt so bad!! I couldn't believe how such a small cut could feel that bad.

I guess I really need to ask why it is if he is removing things I am being sent home after... He said I can go up the stairs to my room after surgery, but then stay in bed for 5 days.  I would rather be in my free bedroom watching my own tv than in a hospital, but I wanna make sure it is safe.

When I had my ovary removed, I had to stay in the hospital for 2 nights because I had to have a bikini insision. If it was only a bandaid insision, then I could have gone home the same day.
I remember when my Dr. told me that he had removed a dermoid, and it had teeth and hair in it!!  I was like WHAT???  I had never heard of such a thing.

Yes that is how with my CT scan on the first dermoid I had, they knew it was a dermoid because of the parts growing inside my ovary! Freaked me out I wanted it out ASAP!

So with ovary removals did you guys stay in the hospital or was it a same day surgery?  I work with about 4 ladies that were all in the hospital 3-5 nights... I am going in for a same day surgery, wasn't sure if I should double check on that or not.

I am glad ot hear it doesn't sound to bad while your body is fixin itself!  I am only worried about the scars on top of 4 month old scars..... I know having a year apart on them last time it was a lot more painful!!  I told the Dr to feel free to just cut me somewhere else I don't care about scars as much as the pain!

Hi,  I am 5 months out of having a dermoid removed and the ovary because there was nothing viable left of it.  I was 26 at the time.  I think I am just now getting really back to normal hormonally.  My Dr. put me on the pill after surgery since I have only had 1-2 periods a year for the last 3-4 years- my regular dr would not put me on them- I had asked several times because I knew it was not normal.  You may not have as much of an issue because your body has adjusted to having part of your ovary removed prior instead of all of a sudden having half the hormones you are used to taken away.  My dr told me my remaining ovary should take over in 3-4 months.

I guess I'm a little odd.  My dr called me 5 hours after my CT scan and the radiologist had to call her in that time.  They knew it was a dermoid right away because they could see teeth and hair..... Ewwwwwwwwwwww.....

Hi, I am 40 yrs. old and i had my right ovary removed due to a dermoid on it. My first two periods i thought someone was pulling what was left inside out! It was rough the first two days of my periods. Now things seem to be leveling out. My recover time was nothing. I was back to work in two weeks. I work in a grocery store and do alot of lifting. As for my hormones nothing has really changed much. I havent experienced hot flashes yet, and i still crave my chocolate. As for ovulating, I think i am doing it every other month. I am trying to become pregnant so i have started keeping track of it.
I wish you all the luck in the world and a speedy recover. Think positive. That is all we can do.

I only had major hormonal issues for the first month or so after I had my ovary removed-maybe even shorter than that. The first week was the most difficult because I was still in the hospital (I had a laparotomy) and had night sweats. I think I also had additional hormonal issues because I had just given birth to my son 3 months earlier and I was still breastfeeding when I had to have emergency surgery. I had to give up breastfeeding when I had surgery. Although they said it was still perfectly safe for the baby, it was just too hard for me. As soon as I got my period after surgery, I went on the pill. My hormones have been somewhat normal since then until I decided to go off of the pill, although I have developed cysts on my remaining ovary even on the pill. For the first two months off of the pill, I had nausea just like pregnancy nausea, but I wasn't pregnant. My period was 4 days late the first month off of the pill and since then my cycles have been kind of short-only been lasting 24 or 25 days. I have also noticed that I get PMS-like symptoms (acne, chocolate cravings, fatigue, etc.) when I'm ovulating. I have the symptoms for a few days and they go away until about 4 days before my period. My gyn/onc wants me to go back on the pill my next cycle because he doesn't want me getting pregnant until after I have surgery to remove the cyst on my ovary (hopefully, not cancer, but he won't know for sure until they get in there and biopsy it) and because they are supposed to suppress cysts, although I developed this cyst while on bc pills. I had kind of painful periods before my surgery, but never once had a cyst (that I knew of) or the symptoms I now have before then. The doctors say that the other ovary just takes over and it does, but it seems to be different than before. Unfortunately, I had the malignant form of a dermoid cyst so that complicates things with my situation so maybe your hormones won't be as bad. I hope that everything goes well with your surgery. Best of luck to you!

No, I don't have a date for surgery yet. My dr's office was supposed to call today and schedule it. So, I am thinking that probably within a couple of weeks.

About 6 years ago, I had a dermoid cyst on my right ovary. And like you said, they didnt know what exactly it was until they went inside and looked. I just didnt know if they were able to tell what kind from a sonagram or CT scan or any other kind of test. I am wondering if my complex cyst could be another dermoid cyst. I guess I will find out soon enough.

I also had my ovary removed with the dermoid. I didn't experience any hot flashes or anything like that. I guess I was lucky, maybe you will be, too. :)

That is just the guess it is complex from the ultrasound but since I have had 2 dermoids that is a pretty good guess.  So techniqually it is only a guess... When i had my 1st one diagnosed I Had a full CT scan and they saw parts of it that apparently they could tell it was dermoid back then, but that is the only time I have heard of them diagnosing them before opening you up...

Good luck... do you have a surgery scheduled?

I was just wondering how they know that it is a dermoid cyst? Did they do an ultrasound? I was just diagnosed last week with a complex cyst. They didn't tell me what kind. I was wondering if there was a way to tell exactly what kind of cyst it is that I have.
Good luck with everything.:)

Thanks you guys :) That really helps.. I just don't know what to expect.  I know that the scars on top of the first scars hurt worse... so I am nervous about that, but I am really glad to get the ovary that keeps making these aliens inside me OUT!

Even though I have had to recently it still freaks me out to think about them taking my girl parts out! They are MINE!!

Thanks for your time.
