Adenxal cyst-Severe pain

I have been having pain off an on for months, but the last few weeks the pain has stayed and gotten horrible. The pain is on my R side, mostly below my ribs but radiates around to my side and over to my spine. I literally feel like there is some kind of knot or lump in there and feel alot of pressure and pulling pain. I went to the urgent care who sent me to have an MRI to rule out kidney stones. The MRI shows a 3x4cm R adnexal lesion, my GYN Dr did a pelvic exam and says he thinks the pain is too high to be a cyst but that he is going to treat it like a cyst and wants me to wait it out for a few weeks and see how the pain gets with my next period. The pain gets worse as the days go on.  The urgent care Dr wants me to have a pelvic ultrasound and my GYN won't do it so they are sending me to get an ultrasound somewhere else tomorrow. I am freaking out. I don't know what this is or what to do. Why would my pain be so bad so high? It is hurts to my spine all up and down my back from my ribs to my hip.

The ultrasound shows a large R ovary with unilocular anechoic 3.0x3.2x2.8cm cyst. Recheck in 6-8 weeks. Not sure what all of that means however! It also says small follicular cysts noted in the L ovary. Guess its just a waiting game now until I stop hurting. Thanks for all of your help!

Thanks for all of the info! I actually realized I was posting on the wrong forum about the same time I hit the post button lol. I was reading about the ca125 and it does seem misinformative sometimes. Which is the last thing I probably need at this point! My mom was just diagnosed with breast cancer and so I think she is really freaking out more than I am. I am just hurting and want the pain to go away. I have a 15 month old and even getting up and carrying him and playing with him is causing me pain. I go for the US in a few hours and will know more then. Thanks so much!

Hi again,
Jun is right about the Gyn/Onc. being the absolute best when it comes to matters such as this but the problem is that it's very difficult to get a referral unless your regular Gyn suspects a malignancy. One can't just make an appt with one usually , since they reserve their appts. for those that really must use their services, especially in the larger cities. I was told that if they attended every cyst removal, the patients that really needed them would have no one to turn to. I depends a lot on your location, but many of the gals on here have heard the same thing. Many Surgical Gynecologists do remove cysts, ovaries, etc. and have a Gy/Onc perhaps on "stand by" if they are at all concerned... You'll have a much better idea after your US though and you can go from there.. ..

Good luck again,

I'm sorry you're having such a time of it.  You might also like to post on the Ovarian cyst forum. There is a lot of information there..

Regarding the CA-125--- it unfortunately will not rule out cancer. It is primarily used in patients already dx. with Ovarian cancer to determine how well the treatment is working. If you look further back on this forum , you will find ladies with high numbers on the CA-125 that do not have cancer, further there are ladies with ovarian cancer that have very low numbers. The American Cancer society does not recommend it for screening purposes since there are so many things that can elevate the numbers; infections, endometriosis, even pregnancy..The Dr's find it most useful in postmenopausal women and those with other symptoms. The symptoms you are having are very common with cysts. But I know how frightening it is.. just waiting and not knowing what's going on !

The best test is the TVUS (Transvaginal Ultrasound) which is what you probably will have tomorrow.. And, by the way, "adnexal" only refers to the ovary.. And, to make you feel a little better, they seem to use the words "mass","tumor", and cyst interchangeably so don't let the terminology frighten you. For instance on my hospital/Insurance papers it said when I had my ovary removed due to cyst last year:"Adnexa Removal".. meaning removal of ovary..

Hopefully it is a cyst that may resolve itself within a few cycles. Cysts are really very common and 95% benign. I don't understand why the Gyn. won't have a TVUS performed since that is the best way to determine if there is a cyst... Many times they do wait for a few cycles to see if it resolves itself. So, actually, that's pretty standard treatment. Why not check the top right of this page "Health Pages".It will explain a lot about cysts. And google "CA-125 reliability" and you will have more info. on that test.
Try not to worry ... come see us on the Ovarian Cyst forum and let us know how the US goes..

Good luck,
Sandy

It is called gyn/oncologist who has more trainning than regular gyn.  You can see they even you don't have cancer.  They are the best for handling femal productive mass. You have to have one when you have sugery in that area.

I agree with finding a new GYN!! I am not going back to him. He didn't ask my symptoms, or anything just looked at the mri report and gave a script for celebrex. I will ask about the ca125. The bad part is I dont have a primary Dr so I have only been using the Urgent Care Dr, he is actually an ER Dr he just helps run the urgent care. So after the US I will probably get an appt with some kind of specialist, depending on what they find. Thank you so much!!

Sorry about your situation.  Just want you know that you are doing the right thing for your own body. Be very strong about finding what is the cause of the pain.  asking your dr to have ca125 done, it can be a side evidence for dx or rule out OVCA.  Suggest a CT scan if US can not tell.  Just be proactive!  I don't understand why your GYN wouldn't do. i think you shoud find a NEW GYN.

Peace and Love
