BREAKTHROUGH BLOOD SCREENING TEST

On 60 Minutes in Australia last Sunday there was a story about a breakthrough blood screening test that Australian Scientists are working on. They are at the Clinical Trial stage and hope to have the test available worldwide within the next 5 years. There is a video of the story available online - http://ninemsn.com.au/ then select the 60 Minutes site under the "News/current affairs" option. The story to select is called "Lifesaver". I shed a couple of tears, but it's well worth having a look at!

Hi Md,

Thank you. I went to see another Gastro Doctor at St Vincents. I have to have a C.T scan, he seems to think that it could be irritable bowel syndrome along with all my other gyno problems. I have several lumps in my abdomen and one of them Is over the lining  of the liver, did you have that problem as well?  I hope I'm nor being to nosey, do you mind me asking what was the cause of your enlarged liver?

Have a goodnight

Please don't let the enlarged liver problem go without going to a Gastro dr or a dr the specializes in liver problem. I've been down that road and I'm glad I had it check because there was a problem nothing to do with female problems. Please have it check.Good luck

Hi,

I also work from home for a company my partner and his associate is starting, as I have been to unwell to work for the past 1 1/2 years. Did your Son enjoy Australia? Alot of people like to come here for the surf. The sharks have been out of control especially in the south and west of Australia, there has been alot of deaths in the past year or so. Its a recent thing I think that it has something to do with the warmer weather and they are comming in alot closer to shore.

He loved Australia, said it is actually quite like Canada.  He liked New Zealand and Malaysia too, but he was pretty glad to get home.
I am terrified of sharks. When we went to Hawaii last year I barely went in the water.  Must be my prairie upbringing!
I am not scared of gophers.

Hi again.  I have a friend who has an enlarged liver and they told him not to drink alcohol, just a passing thought.
Yeah I am working on the computer tonight (I work for my husband, he has his own company) and checking on the party every few minutes.  It's fun to think of you guys out there.  I was interested you mentioned the sharks, my oldest boy (23) did a 6 month tour of Australia and SE Asia, he bought a surfboard, I was scared to death the whole time.

Hi, Just wanted to say thank you for welcoming me, this site is fantastic and supportive. I have been sick for the past year and a half. I suddenly piled on 25 kilos within several months and my stomach was so badly distended that I looked as though I was 8 months pregnant, I was also having chronic pelvic pain, back pain, constantly needing to urinate, and fatigue. I was sent to a Gastro doctor who jut felt my stomach and said that I had irritable bowel, and that the bloating was caused by stress and breathing in to much air. So I then went to another well know specialist and he said that my stomach was the most significant case he has ever seen. The bloating was so severe that it has left me with strech marks across my lower abdomen. I had a C.T scan and that showed a 2.8x3cm cystic structure on the left ovary the doctor said it was most likely representing a functional cyst. I had a laproscopy in April 2005 and was diagnosed with minor endometriosis on the cul de sac area which was removed, not sure what happened to the cyst. Because of all the pain I have been unable to work, lucky I have a fantastic partner. 3 months ago I started having a lot of pressure on my right side and felt as though I was going to burst and I have lumps through out my abdomen on the right side, my love life has disappeared because the past 4 times I have had spot bleeding afterwards. I went back to the doctor and as usual they weren't helpful when I mentioned ovarian cancer I was told not to worry about that, and I shouldn't worry because I'm to young. I had more blood tests done my ca 125 was 9, my liver dsyfunctional test is elevated.and I had a upper abdominal ultra sound which showed that my liver is enlarged. I had another transvaginal ultrasound on Thursday but didn't get to pick up my results that day. And I'm having another C.T scan next week, but they are so expensive $625 but I can claim back half on medicare. Sorry I feel as though I have been rambling.I guess I'm worried because Ovarian cancer runs in my family. I emailed the Oprah producers yesterday afternoon, it sounds as though they will be recieving alot of emails from the us Girls.
Thank you for listening.

Take care

Kate

Hi Katie,

Thank you. I turned 30 last week. When I asked why my liver was enlarged I was basically told that it was nothing to worry about. I have been to alot of doctors and they aren't very helpful. maybe its the endometrisos as the symptoms are simular to ovarian cysts. I know of women in there 50's and 60's who have never had a pap test, which is a worry.
Hope you are enjoying your night.

Oh you poor Kate-Kid, You have been through an awful ordeal. Can I ask how old you are? Some of your symptoms do sound like irrital bowel, but, they can be other things as well. It is good that your CA 125 test was low, but, as you know, many doctors disregard that test, especilly in premenopausal women. Do they have any theories on what may be causing your liver to enlarge? The CT scan is one of the best ways to go (ouch on the cost) so hopefully they can get to the bottom of this and help put your mind at ease. Keep at it and keep bugging your doctor... and get a different one if you aren't satisfied.
I was talking to a friend today (she is also 48) and I asked her when she last had a pelvic US.  She said she had never had one. GEEEZ if you don't ask, or know to ask, you just get pathetic health care.
Keep writing, the ***Chicks*** here are fabulous...
Love and prayers, Katie in Canada

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the site. I'm from Sydney Australia and watched the Ovarian Cancer programme on 60 minutes on Sunday night. I'm also going to email Oprah, and think it would be great if we could get as many women around the world to do the same. My Grandmother and Great Grandmother both died of Ovarian Cancer and I have been having a lot of Gyno problems. Have a good day everyone. Kate

I'm doing fine thanks Katie. Hope you are well too. I hadn't seen the show but someone told me about it, so I got straight onto the site and thought this could be great news! Hope Oprah thinks so too! It'd be soooo fabulous to get as much info out there as possible so that we can spread the news that early detection is the key. Hopefully when this test becomes available, it will be within the reach of every single female on the planet!!

Just blowing my nose here. Oh my that was excellent! It ran fine in the format you posted it, it is about 13 mins and well worth watching, but ***sad*** warning. (my heart just breaks for that pretty redhead).
So, they hope to have this universal screening, as you say, and SOONER if they could get more funding! Wonder if Oprah would like to send them some money....? Thank you for sending that, great news.
and....
How are YOU Vixen?

We need to email this to Oprah.  Perhaps if she sees this it will help to prompt her to act on it.  You are right, I teared right up.  I am still shaky after listening to it.
