Cisplatin Side Effects

After optimal debulking surgery in April 2006 at age 53 that included complete hysterectomy, removal of both ovaries, omentum, and spleen and diagnosis of stage 3c epithelial (serous) ovca, I had 2 rounds of intraperitoneal chemo (Cisplatin/Taxol) before this regimen was discontinued due to side effects related to renal function (Creatinine rose from 2.1 to 3.1 over the course of the 2 rounds despite aggressive in-patient hydration).

After my Creatinine level decreased and stabilized, I then completed 4 rounds of IV Carboplatin/Taxol (with no further renal problems) in October, 2006.

The good news is that so far I have had no evidence of disease since. Yet, even though I keep my protein intake to 40-50 grams/day, stay hydrated, avoid caffeine, etc., my Creatinine level averages 2.5 which effects my red cell count. The fatigue has been on-going and had a red-cell booster shot which helped somewhat.

My med onc tells me that all I need to do is drink 64 oz of my favorite non-alcoholic beverage(s) every day. This doesn't seem to be doing it for me. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions of what else could be helpful.

Have you been referred to a nephrologist for a consultation regarding your kidney functioning?  This is a physician that specializes in the treatment of problems with kidneys, if you haven't had one, ask for it, you deserver to know exactly what is going on.  Good luck

Wow, that peritoneal IV is difficult. Yes, tons of water helps those kidneys.

Have you tried sublingual B12. It really helped me. A deficiency causes anemia. Also see a nutritional counselor specially on your kidney trouble. I had one at the hospital that recommended B vitamins, green tea, mushrooms and other stuff. A lot of time you can get the injections at the hospital. I did not have the peritoneal treatment and maybe you'll get a post from someone that has had it. With all the studies out there, your treatment that you had shows a better response but I am sorry you have run into this. Yes, see a kidney doctor. Why not. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your ideas. A nephrologist saw me after the 2nd round of Cisplatin when I had a kidney ultrasound (it was normal, thank God). Evidently I have to be careful not to ingest anything that disturbs the kidneys even though this is a only a mild impairment from the chemo. It may be reversable over time and I want to do everything I can to help it along. I will look into whether the B12 can help when have an appt next week for check-up on how kidney function is now. I have been very happy with how things have gone so far, and just pray the ovca stays in remission. Thanks again.
