Constant Menstrual Bleeding Since January

by alwaysmilin, Mar 23, 2003 12:00AM
I am 47 and I have had a period for the past 9 weeks straight. (The period I had before this extended one was very light).
Prior to this I had no problems with my period whatsoever- no pms, no cramping or anything.
I had an  ultrasound which indicated a septated cyst, and some thickening of the uterine wall. I am being referred to an GYN for further evaluation.
Do cysts cause bleeding, or is it the thickening of the uterus causing it? Or menopause??
The doctor gave me 10 days of provera to clean out my uterus, which I am on now.I also had an endometrial biopsy, but the results are not backyet.
What are the odds that this is cancerous?

Hello - I was reading your questions and you are like a Godsend right now.  I read that you had an endometrial biopsy.  This is from your uterus, correct?  I'm scheduled to have this done also and I'm scared to death, can you tell me what they do and if it hurts?  I too am having problems and my doctor has suggested I have this but I am just so scared and don't have anyone to ask.  Thank-you so much (and I do hope you are getting better soon, also)......

No the endometrial biopsy not as bad as I expected. Personally, I felt that it was easier than a regular pelvic, you know when the doctor palpitates your organs. (I ususally am tense during a pelvic exam, and I hate it when the Doctor pushes on my abdomen, as I am ticklish)
During the test,I felt some mild pinching and some cramping type pain, but I would say it was mild to moderate, and did not last very long, about 10 seconds. The whole test only takes about a minute and a half.
The main thing is to relax, and try remember to breathe.I rubbed some Lavender oil on my wrists to help me to relax, and took two ibupofen, and an Ultram (also a pain reliever I had around my house for back pain) before the the test.
I did not bleed much after. Most of my discomfort came hours later when the ibubofen wore off. As soon as I took two more, it went away. I had some residual tenderness, but not bad.
Just go in in a relaxed, positive  frame of mind, and that will help.
The doctor inserts a speculum, and  dilates your uterus, then inserts a long narrow straw like tube into your uterus. which they draw out a sample of the fluid in your uterus. Then they send it to the lab.
