Crazy/Sexy Cancer book

Did anyone see the Montel show today? I watched it because it was about a doctor and bioidentical hormones and then they had the woman on who wrote that book, Crazy Sexy Cancer. I think someone on here mentioned that book before.  She was so inspiring!!!
Hugs,
Colleen

Totally agree with you regarding having an MD look over your supplements, Chris.  My sister-in-law (lypo-sarcoma ?) tried the sharks teeth ? .. didn't help, but she felt she was at least doing something for herself.    I personally wasn't offended by your comment .. you have the right to express yourself as does everyone else.  :-)

Please know that in no way was I trying to pass judgement or to be flip about it. Maybe my comment about the cows in the pasture was uncalled for, but I did feel that all of that was going to extremes that would just be too much for me. I understand that there are many out there who do use non conventional ways of trying to fight their cancer. If they feel comfortable with that and feel it works, then that is fine. I know of others who use evfen different methods than what anyone has ever talked about here. I know a woman who uses an indian spiritual healer. He walks for her when she is having chemo, and does all kind of things that I myself have a hard time believing in. But she feels that it is working for her and that is all that matters. I just feel that if methods like these are used, then you should also have a regular medical Dr also. It has been proved that although there are many herbs and natural methods that people use, many of them can prevent chemo from working like it should, and if you are seing a medical Dr then Ihope that you are getting his approval before using anything else.
I did feel sorry for her (I think her name was Kris, or some variation) and as I said in my previous post, there was a lot about the show that hit home. But I also felt it hard to connect because even trhough she has been fighting it, she has not been through half of the things that many here have been. The other 3 women in the show, were much easier to connect to as they were dealing with chemo, fatigue, hair loss, all of the things that we have all come to know as a part of our cancer.
I have no problem with the nutrition side of it as even with out cancer we all know how important nutrition is. And I myself also take vitimins and supplements. But I also feel that cancer is cancer and there is only so much we ourselves can do. And I too believe that a positive outlook and the will to fight have a lot to do with how you are affected by it.
I am sorry that I offended anyone. I should have thought a little bit before I said something so off hand, but that is still the way that I feel and I cannot change that.

I cannot comment on the book as I have not read it and they didn't go into that much detail on the show.  She just had a positive outlook on life, the same as many of you do on here, and I found that encouraging.  Some people try things that I would consider wacky but to each their own.  My uncle was diagnosed with prostrate cancer and his attitude through chemo and radiation has been unbelievable. I am not sure I would be that way but it is inspiring.

I think that all of you fighting this horrible disease are doing the best you can, staying as upbeat as possible and I admire you for that!!!

Hugs,
Colleen

While I was never an extremist in the diet or exercise departments, for the most part I believe I made healthy choices.   Insofar as otherwise being in "good health" (that is besides having stage 3 OVCA,) I guess there was some pay off to my discipline.  Now I will eat and do whatever I want while I can.  I agree with Judy about the balancing act and have no problem with Chris' take on this or any other issue...

I remember my Dad desparately drinking bizarre, foul smelling blender concoctions based on some book that I thought was a hoax to make cash off of cancer patients.   He even bought some illegal Mexican laetril from the back room of a health food store.  I never told him I thought it was a bunch of hocus pocus figuring if he thought it would work, what was the harm?

I do take issue with the notion that if I think positively, I will be cured.  Sure, you want to stay as upbeat as POSSIBLE and do whatever it takes to retain quality of life.  Hoping that we can all share our thoughts on these and all topics without rancor.

Personally, I'm not sure how much diet and supplements affect the course of this disease.  I do not oppose supplements .. I take Vitamin E, B complex (w/ folic acid & C), etc.  I am debating about trying Essiac Tea and/or Ginger root tea.  I bought a bottle of Co Q10 (?) but haven't started them yet.  I drink lots of cranberry juice and eat lots of cranberries.  However, my diet, by and large, is the same as always.  I eat chocolate, brownies, whatever.  It makes me feel good.  I eat red meat, poultry, fish .. any and all as often as I like.  My disease has been more or less stable since finishing tx in 11/06 with the help of tamoxifen.  My life has been normal (except for the fear).  To me, fighting cancer is a balancing act ... you do what you need to do with the drugs .. and try to balance the rest of your life doing what makes you happy.   Judy C

I saw the movie last year and really felt for her as there was not treatment for her kind of cancer.  I think she is darn lucky not to have to go through h-ll with chemo or surgery or radiation!!! She also lucky she does not have to deal with the side effects of these conventional treatments.
If I was told that there was no medical treatment to save my life, I would be open to trying anything, including drinking my own urine ( which I have) if will help make me better and prolong my life.

I am glad she has found somethings that work for her!

Crecco has every right to pass her own 'judgement'. She only felt that to her it was too extreme for her and she felt that she would not be able to follow such a regiment. She is not shoving her 'judegment' down to everyone's throat and I respect her for that for her even though I may or may not agree to her opinion.

By saying a person has  no right to pass judement is 'passing judgement' on another person.

Just my two cents worth.

Well,  you should not pass judgement and be so fllip it just because it is not what you want to do.  Our health and success is and can be related to our mind.  I do believe in suppliments and as you put it growing my own grass and extracting the juice.  I won't go into the correct terminalogy or the benefits but please don't put the concept out with the cows.  I was stage 3 grade 3 agressive ovarian cancer.  I am almost two years out now and I believe my exercise, relaxation tapes and change in diet and suppliments have helped me get here.  (  I also had a young agressive surgeon and IP and IV chemo to help my cause)/  So for me i will be happy to live with the cows. My change in diet and suppliments came from an oncoligist in the chicago area who for the past 20 years has had diet changes as part of his treatment. Whether it is slow growing or fast the word cancer strikes fear.  I do saw the film and i feel so great that this young girl wanted to put her body in the best possible position to stay healthy and alive.
I have been on this site for almost two years please excuse my first and only rant but we shoulld not pass judgemtn or make fun of what someone must do to take control and live their life through the horrible judgement of the word CANCER

I did not see Montel but did see the movie that she made. Paula you are right about it being hard to identify with her. While it was a very moving show, she had no treatment at all for her type of cancer. A lot of it was about her looking for ways to help fight her cancer, like natural remedies etc. She went to lengths that I thought were rather extreme. I do not want to bring all of that back up but I could not help but wonder if all the things that she did had any actual benefit for her, as her cancer was rare and very slow growing. How could they really tell? But if I have to resort to growing my own grass, picking some everyday and extracting the "juice" out of it to drink, well, I do believe that I will pass. If I need to eat grass that bad, I will join the cows in the pasture. NOT!
There were aspects of her movie though that we could all relate to, such as the original dx of cancer, trying to find a good Dr, waiting for results and that kind of thing.

Yes, I read it almost a year ago right after it came out.  I've also seen the movie she made of the book.  I recently passed the book onto a recently-diagnosed young woman in my support group because the book seemed especially relevant to young women.  It was somewhat hard to identify with the author because if I remember right she hasn't really had any treatment--no chemo, no radiation, no surgery.  Her cancer is very rare and incurable but not growing for now.
