Genetic disposition

Well here my family goes again.  For the last 4 Generations and suspected more, however tests weren't around prior to that every single female in the famly rather born to direct male or female decendants of a particular line of my family has had cancer develop in the following way.  in the late 20's early to mid 30's Breast Cancer.  If this is survived and so far always has been Ovarian cancer follows in the mid 50's and by age 57 every woman in our family is dead from Ovarian or Brain cancer.  If they have a Histerectomy it shows as brain cancer in mid 50's if not it shows as ovarian then progresses to brain cancer.

My mother is the latest casualty of our faulty family Genetics.  By the way it's not only the women affected for us men we get throat, or mouth cancer and if we survive this then later it becomes pancreatic cancer, although it's not 100 percent like it is for the women but it's above 50%.  Again my data is the last 4 Generations and our family was studied at University of KY Lexington in some type of genetic casual link.

Well my mother grew a 4CM x ? x ?  the doctor wont tell us the size will only say 4CM tumor on the right side, right around where the head starts to curve about at ear position.  This tumor apparently grew in 2 months as 2 months prior she had a CT, because we thought she had a stroke and had fallen causing her to break her arm.  That CT apparently didn't show the tumor as her ability to walk and balance became worse, and her hearing and ability to focus on conversation worsened my father had to "beg" her primary oncologiest to take another CT sure something was wrong finally he aggreed and found the tumor.  They began focused radiation and hope to use a "gamma knife" to remove it if it shrinks.

However they aren't really giving us any real time frame or life expectancy at this point.  Our past experience tells us we have less then 2-3 months, but all the reading i've done shows vast improvements since we lost are last relative to this progression so we still have some hope.

My question now is for my daughter she's 7 is there a treatment for her that might stop this cycle?  In our family it's not if just when you'll get cancer.  How we live what we eat, smoke, don't smoke, coffee, no coffee, outside external factors seem to have very little effect.  You will get cancer.  Already 3 cousins 1 aunt and 2 2nd cousins have recently had breast cancer and the procedures to save them from it.  Don't forget my mother who as the rest of the family had breast cancer at 33 beat it then about 20 years later had ovarian and now its gone to brain.  Something else we don't know or at least i've never been told is if the Brain cancer is related to the ovarian as in cells broke off and traveled or if it's own type of cancer.  Guess that's something to ask for future generations to know after my mom passes.

So again what type of preventative treatments exists for my daughter and where is the best place to have that done?  Who's the person that that person would take their loved one to in the same situation?  If I don't try something then it's a fact that my daughter will have cancer.  So I can't just sit by and not try, but even with our family history doctors I try to talk to are more then reluctant to really give me much information.

When your daughter is older, birth control pills have been shown to have a great effect on preventing ovarian cancer.  My gyn/oncologist suggested that my daughter start taking them at age 15.

The insurance is more likely to cover the cost of BRCA 1 & 2 testing with such a family history.  Mine was covered through Blue Cross/ Blue Shield.  My out of pocket was next to nothing.  I advise you to try to get the test.  Marie

Have the women in your family been tested for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene?  It's an expensive test that most insurance companies don't cover, but with the familial history, it seems like it might important to know if they are carriers.  If they have, and it's positive, the first step would be having your daughter tested, as well.  If she has the genes, you'll know way in advance if she is predisposed to have the same issues.  At such a young age, I don't know if there is anything preventitive she can do.  I agree with Karen, though. Post on the doctor's forum, and also talk to your your daughter's doctor about your concens.  Perhaps they would have some ideas for your consideration.

I'm sorry for your familial history of cancer.  It has to be very scary for you knowing all of this.  I don't really have anything to contribute other than you might want to post on the Doc's forum and ask them if there is anything you can do.  I don't think the technology is there at this point but you never know until you ask.
