Granulosa Cell tumor

by jackietoo, Jun 02, 2005 12:00AM
I have been diagnosed with Granulosa Cell Cancer and had a hysterectomy two months ago.  I have gone to anGYN/ONC but only after the hysterectomy and since the surgeon said no further action was necessary.  The GYN/ONC said an INHIBIN A blood test was required and were CT scans.  How often do these procedures need to be done.  My tumor was confined to the ovary and no positive cells in pelvic washing were found.  Any help would be appreciated as I am at a loss.

Hi Jackie
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  I, too, had a complete hysterectomy two months ago and have GCT.   My oncologist and I decided that the blood tests will be done every 3 months and CT scans every six months.   There is also an Inhibin B blood test that my doctor thought would be beneficial as well.  There are good message board conversations on www.ovca.net regarding GCT.  Look through the archives for more information.  Good luck!

Thanks Sandy for helping me out.  I am going to take your advice and that of the GYN/ONG.  He suggested exactly what your are doing with the 3 months for blood tests and 6 months for a CT Abdomen/Pelvis W/Contrast. Please lets stay in touch it sounds like we are at the same place with this GCT.  Do you still have abdomenial pain and loss of appetite?

Hi Ladies,
Just some info.  If you check down through earlier posts you will see one from Jessietwo on May 7th.
I will add here.  There are several blood tests for monitoring Granulosa cell.  Inhibin A and B, Calretinin (sp), and Mullerian Inhibiting Serum---MIS.  Unfortunately, as you have probably found, these blood tests are usually not administered before a surgery even when a CA125 comes back within normal limits.  Granulosa Cell doesn't occur that often.
Can you please share your ages and whether or not you had surgery through to staging.  BSO, TAH, Onemtectomy, and staging with washings.  Since this is what happened to me, I am not sure if having the washings is the same.
The Ovarian Cancer Network ovca.net thread is a wealth of information---go back through the archives listed at the bottom of the forum page.
    Take care!!!

Hi Ladies,

I took Sandy's advice and had an INHIBIN A blood test done and a CT Abdomen/Pelvis W/Contrast done.  All came back ok.  I will go back in three months for another blood test.

I am 57 years old and had a D and C done last August because of vaginal bleeding and everything came back negative.  I truly believe that the tumor was in the ovary then but she didn't discover it.  I am not overweight I just don't think she was through enough.  From my Pathology report I had a TAH, BSO.
Pelvic Washing Fluids; cytospin cytology and cell block came back negative for maglignant cells. The pathologic stage reads pT1a,pNX,pMX. As I understand this is Stage 1 but I'm not sure.  Both the GYN and ONC said that nothing further was required both the blood test and CT scan as the tumor was confined to the ovary.  Hope this helps.  Keep me posted and I let you know what is going on.  If you need any further info I'll call the doctor and let you know.
