Had laprascopic surgery-just curious if what you all experienced

Hi there everyone,

First of all I came here a few weeks ago and I was so frigtened of my upcoming surgery and so many nice people responded, thank you again, you were all wonderful and made a huge difference in how I approached things.

As for the surgery it was laprascopic and I had three incisions. Well, when I woke up I was in horrible pain. The hospital I had gone to ended up being terrible. My cyst was the size of a fist they told me and they had to remove a portion of my fallopian tube and when I woke up the nurse wouldn't give me a shot for the severe pain, only two percocets. I never take pain medication, so I don't know much about it but the percocets did NOTHING for the severe pain, and I was crying so bad and she was in the corner making fun of me with the other nurses saying I was such a baby and a "whiner". I was also dealing with just coming out of anesthesia so I could hardly think, but I figured out if I had my parents come back then she would treat me differently than if she thought I was alone. Well, my mom came back and I was crying in pain and my mom insisted they do something and the nurse sarcastically replied, "Well, if I give her something stronger, then she won't be able to leave in an hour (to go home)." It seemed that was what they were most concerned with, getting me out of there. Finally, I think she gave me a shot of Demerol and the pain subsided. She started acting real nice after that, my mom couldn't believe how she changed!

I am very upset with what I had to go through, especially b/c I am the type of person who never complains and

You have no idea what you are talking about in this case. You are simply making excuses. I wonder how you would feel if it happened to you. I heard and saw what I saw, I wasn't imagining things or twisting things around due to me just coming out of anesthesia. By the way, you got me mixed up with the other person's experience regarding the zero pain tolerance comment. A person knows when someone is being kind and caring, we aren't idiots. This was by NO MEANS kind or caring. She wanted me out the door ASAP, never mind what surgery I had or if I was throwing up, in severe pain and couldn't pee. She was in the corner making fun of me and I was SCREAMING in severe pain, how do you excuse that? She only gave me Demerol when my mom was there, because she figured that if there was no one there, she could just ignore me and make fun of me, but EVERYTHING (attitude, etc.) changed when my mother came in! I really don't know who you think you are to insinuate otherwise. Yes, there are many good nurses BUT there are many that have NO business in this field and I and others have come across them. You seem to think you should "defend your fellow nurses" just because they are a nurse, does that make sense to you. Just turn a blind eye "no matter what" to protect your fellow nurse. Very, very dangerous thinking. You should look at the situation instead of blindly defending and making excuses because someone is a nurse like you. Or how about if it happened to someone in your family? Give me a break! Believe me this person was vicious and mean, it had nothing to do with being concerned about giving me too much pain medication. And no they did not give me a prescription when I left, only tylenol, because they were in such a hurry to get me out the door, I had to call my dr the next day and it took her two days to get the message in order to prescribe some pain killer, which meant I was in severe pain with nothing but tylenol for two days, so do not assume anything about me being giving a pain killer before I left. NO ONE should be treated like I was and in such pain, I just had a huge cyst removed and part of my fallopian tube, ok? I deserved better care that I got and paid for, and I doubt if you or someone in your family was in severe pain and was ignored you would still defend your "fellow nurses".

Hi there everyone!

Sorry I didn't write sooner but I had a few things come up.

Thank you to EVERYONE for sharing your experiences and opinions. You have no ideas HOW MUCH it helped me. I really and truly appreciate all your posts. I will certainly be looking into how to file a complaint and WILL NOT be going back to my current obgyn. It is a shame that there are people like this in the medical field. Believe me it wasn't a good experience because my mother was there and came with me to my 7 day follow up and couldn't believe at the doctor's demeanor.

A note to Simply Star, the nurse, you have no idea what you are talking about in this case. You are simply making excuses. I wonder how you would feel if it happened to you. To everyone else, my deep thanks for your kind words and support and to those that are battling cancer my deep prayers are with you! Wishing good health for everyone. This board is great because of wonderful people like all of you!

Take care and My Best to all of you!

When i had my ovaries removed in nov i had a morphine pump. The surgeon went to great lengths to explain how to use it.I had to press the finger pump as soon as i felt pain.It was explained that as it was such a small dose, not to wait until the pain had taken hold, but to press it as soon as i felt the pain. There was no chance of od as you could only press(with morphine being released)every 5 mins.I came out of threatre at 6pm and all was fine until a nurse put the pump out of reach at 8.30(after dh had gone home)i refused to call a nurse for pain tablets as i stupidly thought i was being a wimp. The next morn on the usual ward round,i asked for pain relief(the same nurse who put my pump out of reach)said"oh didn't they give you the pump back,it was only supposed to be for a little while".THANKS.The same nurse when asked later that day for tablets(pump had been taken down)said"i came round but you were asleep and if you can sleep then you are not in that much pain". Had she looked a little closer she would have seen that i was crying under the bed clothes from the pain. The rest of the nurses were excellent and i must say you will always get the odd uncompassionate one.Good luck with your recovery.Dawn

Hey Angel,
I am so glad your Mom was there to advocate for you! Nobody in pain should have to endure that, but, as you intuited through your pain, making the insurance company timetable was that nurses primary goal, not her patients comfort.  I truly hope that never happens to you again but it is true, insensitive boobs are everywhere.  Should fate turn on you and put in that path again, ask for your Doctor, not another Nurse.  MV

I've been on both sides of the fence in a situation like this...it doesn't help when someone makes excuses for others like them in society.  I agree with most of the people who posted...don't tolerate anything like that from any healthcare professional.  People that go into the nursing field should have the endurance, sincerity & nurturing demeanor that so many patients seek out.  I've seen alot of good ones & alot of bad ones, but keep the faith!  Next time something like that happens, request another nurse...after all, you're the one whose paying the bill for the meds, the room, the service they provide, the supplies, etc...they're there to provide patient care services to you.

I have to defend my fellow nurses in this, there are indeed some times when patients feel the nurses are unconcerned, but on the average I don't believe that to be so. When you are coming "out" from under anesthetic, everything is kinda blurry. A nurse has to follow doctors orders, and since you were evidently  an out patient they were concerned about how you would be able to transit from their care. After they saw that you were accompanied by your parents then a shot of demerol could be given. I worked in an outpatient care area for years and have seen this reaction many times. You were given a pain medication along with your anesthetic and doctors rarely give orders for more so soon. You were probably given a perscription for pain killers at the hospital before you were released and told when you could take them. If the nurse remarked that you had zero pain tolerance than she was taking note of your complaint, not making fun of you. That is probably why she called in for orders to give you the Demerol.

I had the Laprascopic done last Friday... I only had the one cut in my navel... My was not that bad... My nurse was wonderful... I do not think that I had much done inside because it was to bad... He looked around and took some tissues and closed me... My recovery has been easy... But I have to go and have another one done in a few weeks to a month... Good Luck and I hope you feel better...

Hi, I'm sorry to hear what you went through! I would report it.I had laparscopy in Aug,for it being "labeled" minor procedure it is painful! took me a week to feel comfortable enough resume  my normal routine.
As for the hospital,I had similar experience in Oct when I had appendicitis, the dr's were great..but the nurses..OMG! total witches,I woke up screaming in pain, they tried to get me up but I couldnt move (it wasnt done laparscopy, had a nice deep cut)and  nurse told me what I went through wasnt "nothing" and wouldnt help me out of the bed.I spent 3 days in hospital and dreaded her on 3rd shift, she wouldnt help me out of bed, when I asked for pain shot I finally received it 2 hours later,I did report her.You gotta speak up,noone deserves that kind of treatment!
Wishing you a speedy recovery..take care!

I can relate the first surgury I had was laprascopic and I woke up in a lot of pain too. I thought my belly was all cut up, when I actually looked I had two very small incisions, I couldn't believe it. What you can't see is what they did when they were inside of you, that and the gas they fill you up with is horrible. I was in a lot of pain and I had a nurse ask me sarcasticly "Whats your pain tolorence, zero" I could have punched her and little did she know I was full of cancer.

I have  laparoscopic surgery coming up in 2 weeks, so was curious about your experience.  I can't believe how you were treated.  I work  at a hospital, and I know that "pain management" is an accreditation standard that all hospitals must adhere to. There's no way that you should have been "demeaned" when you indicated you were in pain.  If I were you, I would definitely write/contact the CEO for that hospital to report what you experienced, as that was definitely unacceptable, even if you were just there for "same day surgery."
