No hope to great hope

Mum was generally unwell (strong as an ox usually). Hadnt been to her GP for around 10 years although 79. A 'tummy upset' didnt go away and she finally went to her GP who went down the irritable bowel syndrome route.  After reading up her symptoms and possible treatments, I started to feel uneasy about IBS being the issue. A lot of info on line warned that IBS and Ovarian cancer are frequently misdiagnosed.  Expecting to be reassured, Mums GP was dismissive and arrogant and refused to even consider anything other than IBS.  I arranged for Mum to have a transvaginal scan and CA125 and - guess what - advanced (stage IV) OC.  Inoperable initially, she had 4 cycles of chemo combination, then radical debulking surgery, including most of her omentum, another 4 cycles with reduced combination because of increasing neuropathy in her hands and legs.  Last CT scan showed no residual tumour left and no evidence of metastises.  No-one knows if she has beaten it but her prognosis is excellent.  Keep the faith out there - it does happen.  My sister and I will be scanned annually and we will always keep in mind that an indication of IBS may need a wider view by a decent GP.

How many of us were diagnosed IBS???  I know I was. So glad you pushed the issue and she is doing well.  Marie

Great news for you and your Mum! This is a great example of when it is right to seek and get second opinions.

You might want to consider genetic testing to see if you are BRAC positive.

Have a great Christmas with your Mum!
