Ovarian Cancer

Hi name is Tammy, I was diagnosed with stage IIIc ovarian cancer in 2003, since then I have had surgery to remove ovarian tumor the size of a basketball, the omentum, appendix, and a couple of lymph nodes.  From there I underwent 9 months of intense chemo of carboplatin, topotecan, and taxol.  I had a severe reaction to the carboplatin at my last treatment.  Six months later it was back again so I underwent 6 months of chemo with cisplatin and gemzar only to have a reaction to the cisplatin at the 4th month of treatment.  Six months later it was back again this time the right lobe of the liver.  This time it was 6 months of Doxil which has not worked.  My CA-125 continues to climb, now at 270 and I just finished chemo 2 weeks ago.  Had PET scan and CT scans last week, they show 2 lymph nodes in the neck, 1 lymph node by the esophagus, 2 lymph nodes in the iliosopas area, fundus of stomach, and right lobe of the liver all to have cancer. Not good, right?  I go to see my surgeon at U of M in a couple of weeks.  My question is what kind of treatment should I try now ?  I will not give up and have a strong will to live.  Any hope for me?

Hey girl

I',m not familiar with any off this but the other day when i was doing some research on the net,  I typed in "foods that heal", and i came across this sight which talks about, I think they're called "Glyconutirents"  maybe??? Something about them helping to arm you immunes system with the ability to fight off the cancer cells.  There are a few sites on the subject, might be worth the read.  One had a phone number, the site was www.glyco-facts.com/cancer.html,  I beleive in miracles and that soemtimes god can throw us a curve ball or two to test our faith and strenght.  Hang in there.  My prayers are with you.

Thank you very much for your words of inspiration.  May God bless you also.  I am only 40 yrs old and have 3 great kids and a wonderful husband, so I certainly have good reason to fight and stay here as long as God will allow me to.

I have been seeing where there is  anew clinical trial for OVCA. It must be recurrent OVCA in order to get in on it.  I also know that big medical schools(John HOpkins, Cleveland Clinic, NIH, Duke)  they are always doing new experimental treaments and usually you pay nothing for these.

If ya dont mind me asking when ya found out that you had cancer what were your main symptoms..I am going to be 33 next month and i have 3 kids also and ovarian cancer runs in my family and about 8 months ago i was diagnosed with a cyst on each ovary. Now the one on the right is 5.5cm and the one on the left was 4.8cm but with the last ultrasound it seemed to be that the one on the left was bigger than the one on the right, but both are completely solid .They cause alot of pain cause the doctor said that the one on the left has grown to my kidney and my bowel..I have started having all kinds of complications with nausia, stomach cramps and spasms ,the pain has gone into my legs and my sides and my legs feel weak and tired and full of pain all the time..My blood pressure has gone stupid running higher than it ever has .They put me on zophran for the nausia and i am now on three different kinds of pain killers and a blood pressure med and fluid pill..My bowel are crazy and it kills me to have to go..Can ya please give me clue of what all this is...The doctors say that they wont know if it is cancer until my surgery. which is in january. They are removing my ovaries along with the tumors .That is what they call them now..So i have to play the sit and wait game and just hope and pray that it is not cancer when they open me up...Please write back...

I was 37 when I had my surgery and it was diagnosed as ovarian cancer stage IIIc, and it does not run in my family.  I also did everything where I should not have got it.  I have read that usually older women who have never had any children get it.  I had ahysterectomy when I was 33 because of fibroid tumors and heavy menstrual bleeding.  I had already had my tubes tied figuring 3 kids is enough now days.  They did leave my ovaries though so I would not have to take hormones.  I too had alot of ovarian cysts over the years.  I started noticing the vague symptoms when I was about 36.  They were a bloated stomach, weight gain, loss of appetite, loose bowel movements, feeling tired and not as energetic as usual, also my underarms were sore when I would reach for something.  As time went on I had fluid in my lungs also, and around my heart as well as in my tummy, they drained 7 liters of fluid at the time of surgey.  I went to the hospital weighing 160lbs. and left weighing 124lbs.  They discovered the mass when they did an ultrasound it was the size of a grapefruit then within 3 weeks when they scheduled my surgery it was the size of a basketball.  Anyway I wish you the best of luck, and will keep you in my prayers.  I know you are scared but just let God carry you through everything and he will.  I have never had any pain yet, just some discomfort at times and I credit God for that.  Soon enough you will be on the road to recovery.  Take care and good luck.

I go to University of Michigan on Dec 8 and will ask my surgeon if there are any new clinical trials I can go on.  I was also on a clinical trial the first bout of chemo I had for 9 months.  It was hell but I made it through it, I have so many people here that I love that I'm just not ready to go yet.  But I figure every day that I wake up and I'm still here is a good day.  Not quite like my life used to be, but I still have quality life, for how long I'm not sure, but I will appreciate every day that I have until the end.
