Polycystic ovary syndrome

Dear Doc.

My name is Carrie and I am only 27 years old. My husband and I are going to try to have our first baby next year so went for pre pregancy test. I have Polycystic ovary syndrome histry for 3 years and had an abortion in 2001. Here is the outrasound result:

Transabdiminal and transvaginal scans were performed.

The uterus is anteverted measuring 7.1 x 3.2 x 4.8cm. The endometrium measures 6mm in thickness. There is a nabothian cyst noted in the cervix.

The right ovary measures 15ml and the left ovary measures 21ml. Both contain more than 10 uniform size follicles on the surface. There is a 1.7 cm echogenic lesion noted in the left ovary consistent with a dermoid.

No adnexal mass or free pelvic fluid.

Comment:

A Nabothian cyst noted in the cervix.
Polycystic ovary syndrome. The left ovary also contains a small dermoid.

What should I do? I was just refered from my GP to a Gynaecolgist and havn't got an answer yet.
We want to have babies so much. What should I do? Is the dermoid in the risk of Cancer? Is sugery necessary?

Thank you for your attention.

Carrie

thank you for your information. I will wait and see what the doctor says. after some research I am pretty much aware of the situation. only 2-4% of dermoid cysts are bad ones and the rest of them are good but will grow as you said. It might be twisted if it goes too large. I will consider remove it if there is a risk for the baby. After posting the question just knew that my husband's aunt had the same problem but only found out after conception and it was too late to have it removed. The doctor took it out when delivering the baby. It will be the best choice for me if the doc reckon the risk is low.

Thanks again.

Carrie

In my opinion, it doesn't sound like you need to worry about ovarian cancer.  I had a friend who had PCOS and had many troubles but eventually conceived twice and had two healthy babies.  Dermoid cysts can grow large and even burst and cause problems.  I have known three people who had dermoid cysts and none of them were malignant.  I would go with my drs. recommendation on that.  It would be better to have it removed before conception rather than complicate your pregnancy.  Dermoids are very rarely cancer.  Even if it were, in early stages you could just have that ovary removed and still have a good chance of conception with the other ovary.  Keep the faith.  Best wishes.
