Primary Peritoneal Cancer

Hi. My mum was diagnosed with Primary Peritoneal Cancer in January 2007 Stage 3a. She has had a complete hysterectomy and finished 6 rounds of Chemo (Taxol and Carboplatin I believe) in May 2007. Her consultant described her as being in complete remission.  In December 2007 she had an MRI scan which again showed no evidence of any cancer, although her CA125 level has been steadily rising and is currently at 68.  She was told that she would never be rid of the disease and her rising CA125 levels mean the cancer is there but just not yet visable. Is the CA125 test that reliable could her level rising be due to anything else?   What further treatment would you recommend?

Many thanks for all your input.  Her levels are currently rising around 10 a month. From what I have read on here it appears her cancer is platinum resistant which doesn't sound good.  Her oncologist is giving her another scan in 2mths guess we'll find out more then.  Just wish there was a better out look for this horrible disease.

Just wanted to add the NYC's comment - It really does have to do with the pattern vs the number of the CA-125. For example, my onc said he would be worried if my CA-125 got higher 3 consecutive times. Best of luck to you, Deandra

We always say that it the CA125 is not a good diagnositic tool, but a tool best used for someone that has already been diagnosed with the disease and has shown that the CA125 is a good indicator for them.  Rising levels is most likely not a good sign.  Chances are your mother will need to go back on Chemo.  It is not the number but the pattern in the rise of the number that makes the difference.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I can only speak from my own experience.  I have stage IV ovarian.  My oncologist said that what ever my lowest ca125 is which was 6 in November when it doubles regardless of what they see on a scan I am back on chemotherapy.  My next testing is Feb. 12 and so I hope that is remains at 6.  The scans cannot and donot pick up microscopic cancer cells... hope this answer helps.. sorry about your Mum.  By the way other things can raise ca125 which would be infection or inflammation..
