Cyst or Cancer?

My mom had an ultrasound done today and the lady told her, that her right ovary was big and there was a lot of free flowing fluid around her uterus.  Is it possible it could just be a cyst?  The lady told my mom that cysts were only on the outside of the ovary, and tumors were only on the inside.  Is this true?  My mom had nothing on the outside of her ovary.

Hi, that sounds like a lot of useless info the ultrasound tech gave your mom, that causes more anxiety then anything good and doesn't even sound right.  I had a endometrioma which was considered a "tumor" that was all over the outside of the ovary, not within it.   A cyst is ususally considered fluid filled and a tumor has solid components, but can have fluid also.  Not all "tumors" are cancerous.   I think you should call the Gyn tell them you are concerned from what the ultrasonagrapher said and get more info.  Hope things turn out well !  99% of tumors, cysts, are benign.  Shannon
