Through the Belly Button Biopsy?

Hi everyone,

My very awesome hubby (seriously, that man deserves an award), called my doctor today for me, but only got his nurse. He called to tell her that I thought I was bleeding from my bowels. Turns out that my period has started 6 days early.

Anyway, he mentioned to her that I am opting for a 2nd opinion. Not sure how they got on the subject of biopsy, but she said that I can get a biopsy done through my belly button. She also said that my regular gynecologist should be able to do it and that my doctor there (who is a gyn/oncologist) does not do them. WTH? So I told my hubby, from everything I have read, and been told here (thanks kcd86), that the mass must be removed INTACT, probably with the entire ovary.

She then told him that the doctor I am getting the 2nd opinion from and my doctor there actually know each other, and that they get patients coming from him all the time to my doctor there for a 2nd opinion.

Do you just ever feel screwed?

My gynecologist referred me out to this gyn/onc for a REASON. He is NOT going to touch this mass. He KNOWS that I am suppose to be in better hands with someone who specializes in these things.

One thing I found slightly comforting is that she said they will know more about this mass after my ultrasound on 11/5. Perhaps they will do one that indicates doppler flow to the mass?

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with you all.

Isn't it terrible!  I heard comments of that nature also.  I absolutely detest the blame comments.  Thanks for sharing! :)

Always keep in the back of your mind that you are in control and your own advocate. If you feel uncomfortable with what is going on get copies of ALL your tests and bloodwork and go to another gyn/oncology. If that is the case you may have to pick up and take a road trip to a large medical center that see's high volume.
They are doing a doppler blood flow too see if the"mass" has a blood supply which is a high predictor of a cancerous mass
Wish you all the best

I was told once that I got cancer because I didn't pray the devil away enough.  I know why I got my cancer.  My genetics.  Devil is blameless on this one.

Sounds like you are on the right course and know the gyn/onc must be consulted for any mass that has a "chance" of being cancer.    It is a shame that so many in the medical community are in the dark about ovarian cancer.  It often becomes confused with uterine and cervical cancer.  But, I don't think any doctor or nurse has any excuse to be ill informed.  Thank heavens for the internet and the knowledge that others share on this forum.

I was dx 3 years ago with Stage 1a ovca and my primary care assured me there was no way it was malignant because I was only 37.  Also, he said I should opt for a bikini cut and a vertical incision was not necessary.  Thank heavens for this board.  I lurked and like you realized that a gyn/onc was the only way to go.  I was so thankful that I followed my gut (and the advice of these great ladies on the forum).  If had listened to my primary care doctor, I am sure I would not be as well off as I am today.

So, hang in there!  Stay clear of the bad advice and go with the facts.   It is funny how much bad advice you do actually get.  Both pre-dx and post-dx, everyone seemed to have a strong opinion.  I heard so many ridiculous things.    So, don't be surprised if the crazy advice keeps coming your way.

Also, people who don't have cancer often like to think they are in total control and it can't happen to them because........    I even had one lady tell me that she thought I got ovca because I hated my ovaries and they became cancerous from my not accepting them fully.  LOL :o   I can laugh now.   But, hearing this the day after I learned I had cancer made me feel terrible.  There was just so much blame from so many people.  I either must have eaten something wrong, not rested enough, etc. etc. etc.  So, you are already doing great in recognizing ridiculous advice!!!

I hope all does turn out benign for you!   Waiting is the worst!
