Hi plady... Good to see you posting again. I know a lady who is currently doing TPN. She is not able to take anything orally anymore, so needs to have this for about 8 hours each night, to gain her nutrition. I hope you are feeling better, and look forward to hearing from you sometime.... Hugs..Helen...
Dear Plady:
Hello again. TPN is Total Parenteral Nutrition. You may not need it if your bowels have cleared and can eat well without losing weight. But if you continue to lose weight, this is probably the only option to be able to fight and receive treatment.
5FU and Oxaliplatin in combo were done in clinical trials and if you have read the link which Rosemarie have pasted again you will see the amazing result for Platinum-resistant and heavily treated patients. 5FU (Fluorouracil) is an old drug while Oxaliplatin is like Carboplatin or Cisplatin, but easier (without losing its potency) on the body. The positive response rate was 79% including 29% complete remission that is rather amazing for ovarian cancer.
Here's the link again: http://www.asco.org/portal/site/ASCO/menuitem.34d60f5624ba07fd506fe310ee37a01d/?vgnextoid=76f8201eb61a7010VgnVCM100000ed730ad1RCRD&vmview=abst_detail_view&confID=47&abstractID=34542
As you can see this was presented very recently in June of this year to the ASCO annual meeting. Our Onc was the one who recommended it. Of course we knew beforehand that Oxaliplatin was next in line for us since it was recommended by UCLA. Chemo Assay (testing of your tumor for chemo sensitivity) may help if one can get it. If not clinical trial results is one of the best guides whether one regimen can really work.
I see no reason why your Onc cannot use it. Our doctor never gave us any time frame, she just continued on treating us. Again let us pray that you get the right treatment and you gather enough strength.
All the best,
Jatoo
I just realized I posted on the Doctor Forum. Boy I am out of it. Thanks to everyone for your reply.
