To SimplyStar: Medicine Ball for Adhesions

SimplyStar- I asked this question at the bottom of an earlier message string but was afraid you wouldn't see it.  You mentioned that your daughter is using a medicine ball for prevention of adhesions.  Can you give me more info please- how does she use it; how often, what exactly are the expected results, etc?  By the way-you sound like an awesome mom.  How old is your daughter and what stage?  Please give me her name and I would love to add her to my prayer list.  I am 50 years old and my mom had never visited my home in Houston - I've lived her for 20 years and she lives in NY-  because she was so terrified to fly.  When I was diagnosed with OC last May, she overcame her fears and came to live with me for six months totally taking care of me, my husband and kids while I went through chemo.  I have two kids and I can only imagine how hard it is for a mom to watch a daughter go through this.  Thank God for Moms like you!  Best regards,  Rachael

I may have confused you. Mary 53 wrote the instructions for body rolling. I just found them in the archives and copied them for you.

My history is just down the list a little under "my history" surprising title huh? The adhesions are caused by the surgery, so any of us that has had surgery can get them.

Here is the information on body rolling as posted by Mary 53 in the archives:

Of course, to anyone interested in this and if you are not sure about cyst status, etc, check with your doctor before trying this. It is an aggressive type of massage.

Here is the information on body rolling.

A bit of background info first....
This worked for me. My kind and generous weight training teaher offered to teach it to me when I told her that I had to leave class one day (this was back in 2002)since I was in so much pain from surgical adhesions. These had been discovered during a colonoscopy so I knew what was going on.The adhesions were collapsing my colon and causing so much pain, also causing Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The colonoscopy had actually broken things up for me a bit..stretched and snapped them, and I got some relief, but it was very painful going through that and they were reforming again anyway.

My instructor was learning how to teach bodyrolling and had just been to a weekend-long workshop when she helped me. She was interested in teaching this to the aging population saying that doing this type of massage broke up the adhesions that occur naturally in our body.

She said that it is as if some of our insides "glue together" and that this releases much of the gluing because of all the blood, thus oxygen, it brings to the area. It seems to break up the adhesions and it worked for me. She intended to teach elderly people because the "gluing" is so bad as we age if we don't treat it. I figured that if it worked for adhesions that formed naturally in our body, it should work for surgical adhesions.

It is truely amazing. I noticed a HUGE difference immediately. When I sat up after the fist time I did this (about a 15 min. session) I could feel a "FLOOD" or a Rush of blood or something! going to that area. After having pain about 40 times an HOUR for over a year and a half after my surgery, my pain decreased to only about 10 times a DAY for a few seconds at a time. I did this procedure again about a week after the first one and that gave me even more relief. I think it was about four months til I had to do it again. Now I do it about once a year, if that. I have been virtually pain free, ,aside from a dull ache now and then, from adhesions since learning this technique.

The idea is you want to get the blood to the bone, not just the muscle....so it floods the tendons and gets lots of oxegyn there to start healing and breaking up the adhesions.

**My instructor told me to think of a steak and how the tendon is sort of splotchy with blood where it is attached to the bone...well, you want to get the blood totally to the bone so as to really break things up. Regular massage is not "deep" enough.

The ball I used measures 16 inches. Again, though, I did not get the ball thru the website (Body rolling is a dot com, one word, and you can learn about the woman who developed the technique. Anyway, I got just an ordinary ball in a toy section at Target and it looked similar to the one the instructor had used. The ball I have has a picture of Blues Clues on it! Hey, it works. It probably is bigger than the ones they recommend, but, if you think about it, it is squishy to the point where once all my weight is on it, it probably shrinks down to about ten inches. And, I just put my "front" onto the ball for the pelvic pain and not my back.

-------------------------------------
Here is how I did it...leaning my body wt. into it, literally placing the ball underneath me and "rolling" on it...slowly.

I would lay on the pubic bone and then take about four minutes or so to SLOWLY (while remembering to take deep breaths now and then) work my way out to the right side where the ovary once was on that side. After you get there, go back slowly to the pubic bone...breathe deeply. When you get to the pubic bone again, then go to the other side, following a path, if you will, of where you imagine the falopian tube once was. So, you are rolling in something like a "V" formation. After you get to the left side where the ovary once was, then go back to the pubic bone...and, you are done. But, take about 15 minutes to do the whole procedure.

Again, this is how I did it. I got relief. My doctor was amazed. Best Wishes, Mary

Hi  Good Morning  I did answer your post it is under your original post about Ginger  etc.  Mary53  and I have been posting about the use of medicine balls  since I first read her posts. My daughter Leslee is 49 and was DX in June with OVCA3 She had the complete surgery and  chemo and is now doing everything she can to prevent any reoccurances. Houston has great medical facilities. My oldest brother was AIC of the FBI there for years. I was so in awe of Houston when I would visit them. Always check with the onoco before beginning anything.  We do, not just her local onoco but with the Doctor at Mayo that did the surgery. So far they have okayed everything we have researched that MIGHT  be a help. Leslee is looking forward to returning to work after the first, she misses working with her people so much. She works with people with disabilities both in the facility and out in the community. She and her hubby live on a 30 acre,in town, acreage.  They raised 3 daughters, 2 married now, and one just had her first baby. Leslee did not fit any of the 5 markers that Mayo was looking for. She lost  the uterus, overies, tubes, several lymph glands, a section of bowel, and several lesions were "peeled" from various places. The cancer was on the overy and was encapsulated. She has a huge support system and I am just a small part of it. We divide our support in different ways. Cooking, drs appointments, shopping, just visiting, research and the many ways to make her comfortable with a complete recovery. She sets short term goals and works towards them. She set one goal to paint the new babies room, I wish you all could see it. Pooh Bear, Tigger, Eyore, Owlet, Piglet with a huge tree and many little things.  She began this after her chemo started and just finished it this past week end. I think that any woman that finds out she has the big C has to become very pro-active and  a super woman. This site is a super connection for all of you. I am so proud of my daughter because she is so strong in her fight against this dreaded desease.

Thanks for posting all the details about body rolling for me, Rebel Spirit- VERY helpful.  I'm going this week to get a ball!  SimplyStar- sounds like your daughter & I are on similar paths.  I was 49 when I was diagnosed last May with 3A- cancer in my ovaries, uterus and no visible cancer but a few microscopic cells on omentum- almost a stage 2.  I finished chemo in Sept.  Having all my treatment at MD Anderson- a wonderful place.  Yes, I will of course check w/ my doctors about body rolling.  I have a history of scar tissue when I had my gall bladder out so I'd like to prevent any new adhesions.  The strong support network and positive attitude is crucial.  I have a huge Italian family-3 younger brothers and 4 younger sisters; my parents, aunts/ uncles, cousins- all of them are helping me through this.  Because I also had stage 1 breast cancer in 2004, I am trying to convince my sisters to proactively get their ovaries removed- and I think they all will.  I have been tested for BRCA1/ 2 and results came back negative but even so, I think my history needs to be considered.  I'd recommend a great book by Margie Levine, "Surving Cancer".  She outlines 40+ steps she took to survive lung cancer with a prognosis that she would only have 3 months to live (that was 12 yrs ago!!).  She outlines many of the things we have already discussed- diet, exercise, supplements- and also meditation, visualization, attitude, etc.  If nothing else, it's a very uplifting story to keep up our hope.  My prayers are with all of you- Leslee, Rebel Spirit, etc.  Regards, Rachael
