Worried sick!

I have just been diagnosed with a borderline ovarian cyst (20cm) and i have to go into hospital and have it removed, along with my ovary.
I am worried what borderline means. The Dr said during the operation it may be necessary to have a hysterectomy, WHAT! WHY!
Has anynone else been in this position, if so how worried should i be? Thanks

hello i am 22, when i was 18 and 20 weeks pregnant, i had a borerdline serous tumour of stage 1c it was 10 by 12 cm but they were really worried as my CA125 was high, so 2 weeks after my 20 week scan i had a laporotamy they did not know if they had to take both ovaries, but fortunately they only took one and some of my bowel cause it was also infected, i have been getting checked for the last 4 years and in 6 month if everything is fine i am getting discharged, don't worry because they will take good care of you x

Hi,
Just to fill you in I am 25 and have had LMP borderline serous tumor with non invasive implants for 3 years now. I currently still have one ovary but have been told i have 2 years to have children and then my oncologist wants to take everything out( that is provided my next laporoscopy still shows non invasive implants, finger crossed) because kemo does not work on borderline as it is too slow growing it needs to be removed surgerically. If you have had your children I would stringly reccomend getting everything out. My specialist is going to give me a full pelvis clearance, ovary removed and hystorectomy as soon as i am done as although the chances are small of turning invasive it still needs to be taken seriously. There are lots of articales online, i found studies especially the more recent ones to be the most useful.

Best of luck with everything, im sure you will be fine.

I had a large cyst removed last year which was 20cm this was done by laporcopsy. I had the top part of my ovary removed as it was twisted around it. My left ovary was pushed out of place and my womb lost its normal shape. One month later I had another cyst on this ovary which was 5cm with blood in it. After three months this went away I was delighted and we decided to try again for a baby. Nothing happened so after 3 months went again to do tests to check my fertility. It was discoverd i had a cyst 5cm on right hand side ovary and had blood and unusual shape. Doc said to do Laprocopsy to see better. After three months went in but after checking the cyst had grown to 8cm and was advised to have it removed c-section. The gyn-onc  removed my right ovary and my tube and the cyst which he looked suspect. My biopsy showed borderline cancer and I was told i was allowed one chance ivf in two months time(3 months since op). Then he would like to perform hysterectomy within the next year. I am very confused. I have one child she is 8 years old also by c-section.

Hi, not sure what a borderline ovarian cyst is.  There is a borderline ovarian cancer but that can't be diagonsed until a biopsy is taken once the cyst has been removed.  Have the drs mentioned that your cyst may be cancerous? Have you had any blood work - a CA125?  Have you consulted with a gyn-onc?
Larger cysts tend to not be cancerous, but if there is any concern that yours may be cancerous you should have a gyn-onc perform the surgery - just in case.  The only reason I could see they would recommend a hysterectomy is if they find cancer or maybe a severe cause of endometrosis.
