Weird Shaped Cyst?

I'm 34 and was hoping someone may be able to give me a little insight into this cyst thing.

Guess I will start at the beginning :)

I started bleeding in the middle of my cycle. After two weeks of that mess I finally called the doctor (I really dislike doctors. LOL) I suspected a cyst as I had had extremely minor pain on one side, didn't last long wasn't worried about it.
A cyst was confirmed via ultrasound. We waited a month and did another ultrasound, but this time the cyst had grown larger and changed its shape. It looks like an odd shaped tadpole. Immediately, the dr said I need to have laparoscopy to try to remove it ASAP and was scheduled for two weeks later, this coming Monday. (I refused to have it earlier because it was spring break and I'm a stay at home mom.) To be honest, I wasn't thinking very clearly so didn't ask a lot of questions. He said he was "optimistic" about it not being neosplachic (sp?) cells, but it could also be a cyst and/or tumor caused by endometriosis (which I doubt, never had any symptoms of endometriosis and get pregnant if you breathe on me. LOL)

I dealt with CIN-III (cervical dysphasia) so, of course, I am worried about it being pre-cancerous or cancerous. I am the only woman in my family who didn't have a hysterectomy in her early 30's, so don't have any chance to see family history on this. I do have a family history of breast cancer.

At any rate... I've done tons of research on the net and I can't find a cyst like this one. It's looks like a functional cyst, but with a tail, and it definitely wasn't there a month

Welcome to the site!  Let me start by telling you that 99% of ovarian cysts are benign.  Secondly, I had 2 softball sized dermoids removed 12/21/05.  One was nice and round but the one on the left ovary was dumbell shaped!!  So I would have to say yes, they can be different shapes.  Hope this helps.

Given your family history of breast cancer, you do have a slightly higher chance of it being cancerous or 'pre-cancerous' (often called borderline).  However,   considering your young age, and given the fact that a man wheezing in your direction can result in a pregnancy (that's funny!), I suspect that any increase is offset, as having children decreases the risk of ovca.

As for the shape and rapid growth... both of these can be indicators of an ovarian mass like an endometrioma.   I had never had symptoms of endo, yet developed a rapidly growing endometrioma (more than doubled in size in a few weeks) and at surgery my doctor learned that I have a terrible case of endometriosis!  My endometrioma was shaped like a twenty-armed octopus, that was reaching and grabbing for everything in my abdomen.   My insides looked like a mass of raw wounds after that thing was removed.

And, two weeks is not a terribly long time, so do not feel that you have 'put off' your surgery and endangered your health.  As some of the other Battalion members might share with you, some of them had symptoms and test results far more indicative of cancers, yet they still had to wait months for surgery, and to our great relief, their scary masses were found to be benign.

Just wanted to throw my two cents in...I too am 34 and am just four weeks out from having a hsyterectomy(fibroids and severe adeymosis) and l/ovary and tube removed (b/c of a dermoid).  But I just wanted to say that I never had had any problems getting pregnant (literally four kiddos in four years, no multiples :) , my oldest is 6-1/2yrs. and my youngest is 2-1/2yrs.  Anyways I never had any problems until my youngest daughter was about 1.  Then the symtoms slowly starting to show...with the periods, the pain, bloating, blah blah, blah...LOL.  After my new gyn did the VU, he found my uterus to be basically shot and would not have been able to have another child.  These things can really come out of "no where" especially since we moms are so busy being the caregivers to our family (I know I used the chalk up my aches and pains to "I should feel lousy, I have all these kids wearing me out!  :)) Also, these women will give you an amazing amount of support and an incredible sense of companisionship along your journey to find your answers.  (And as Tascha always emphasizes, most are benign (mine was and believe me I FEARED the worst).  You can always count on this website.  God bless you and your family.  Busy

Four kiddos here too.  Told myself all the same things - who wouldn't be tired and worn out all the time running after these little hooligans all the time.  I actually had five pregnancies in six and half years time.  Lost the first to miscarriage at four months.  I used to joke that all I had to do was be in the same room as my ex's Levi's, that's how easy.  I'm still in the watchful waiting phase so I don't know what I have going on yet other than it is suspected that it's hemmoraghic cysts, fibroids or endometriosis growths.  Anyway, I know it's hard to not worry, but that's what we gotta do. . . Love, hugs and God bless, Barb
