bloating and ovarian cyst

I am 51 and my labs say that I am not going through menopause. This seems odd since in the last eight months I have only had two periods., especially since I was 12 yrs.old never missed one till pregnan at 22 and 26.
Two years ago bloating started  after having a minor hemrhoid and so did the start of cysts. I have been fortunate in they have all gone away on their own except the current one has been here three months and on my last ultrasound was still there with two more. I have trouble with constipation ,pressure, and gas. This happens mostly at night and is getting painful. I feel as if I have a full bowel and sometime after having a movement get raw dull pain inside my lower back. I have had a colonoscopy and it was clear. One doctor feels I may have IBS, but no suggestions. My obgyn wants to remove the cyst if it is not gone the end of this month and my ovary. I also have hypothyroidism and my meds were too high. Recently I've developed extemely painful swollen breasts and unexplained weight gain. I' m frustrated and scared to have surgery.,wondering if this is perimenopause or  cancer?
Does anywone know where I should go with this?

Welcome!  First let me reassure you that 99% of ovarian cysts are BENIGN.  Also the ca125 is not a reliable test for premenopausal women.  It is however used as a marker if you do have ovca.  Your symptoms are do suggest an ovarian disturbance.  These cause anything from GI problems, lowerback ache, fatigue and messed up cycles.  If you aren't already, I would suggest seeing a gyn/onc for a 2nd opinion only because they are specialists in the female reproductive area and have seen it all.  Usually once a cyst has reached 5cm, it's chances of resolving are slim and the dr would want to remove it.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed

I was feeling exactly the same way before my surgery.  Now that the cysts are gone, I am feeling 100% better.  I am still swollen from the surgery, but the breast swelling has gone down tremendously.  I am about your same age and was in menopause.  My doctor did tell me that the blood work during that time can fluctuate.  I would have one blood test that said I wasn't in menopause and then another a short time later that said I was.  Our bodies do crazy things sometimes.  Just hang in there, it does get better and do try to have some more testing done.

Ask the Dr to do a blood test CA-125 this is a cancer marker test for ovarian cancer. I have cyst on both my ovaries that have been there for a year with the bloating, low back ache (at times real bad) and constipation. My CA 125 came back fine. Have you been feeling fatigued? I'm now waiting for a surgery date. Looks like they will be doing it with a epidural because of a lung problem. Let me know how it goes with you. My thoughts are with you.

Greetings...
RavenLady recommended that I look for your posts.  I started a thread recently dealing with the reliability of the CA-125.  I understand that we have some common ground.
peace,

I would seek the opinion of a gyn/oncology surgeon.....this is their area of expertise.
YOU HAVE ONLY ONE CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!!  You cannot get it right without the right medical team ....especially during your surgery.
Get all the information you can from your tests.....remember, knowledge is power....then you and your doctors will be able to decide on a course of action specialized to meet your needs.
Hang in there and stay in touch.
Peace be with you.

Thank you for all your helpfull information. I have had three C125 blood tests at the time of my ultrasounds. They all came up clear.
Today I am scheduled for another ultrasound to see if my cysts have grown or are going away. I have had sharp twisting cramp pains in my left side where they are since last night. This is new and at least I have an appt. today to ask about that. All month I had what felt like very mild menstrual cramps. All this has such an emotional impact on a woman. I applaud you all for your battles for health. I was married in June last year(second marriage) and we postposed our honeymoon till early May this year. Everything's payed for and my poor husband has been so patient. I have no sexual desire physically. Mentally it sounds good. I am always exhausted. My boss had surgery(groin, with two 14 inch cuts at the top of each thigh!) this weekend and is counting on me for 2 weeks help. I am her Nanny and she cannot lift her baby for that time. My Dad had two heart surgeries this month and came through great. My son is scheduled for hand surgery next week. Sometimes I think someone out there is trying to prepare me for surgery. Then sometimes I just wonder in my gut if this is my ovaries ways of shutting down normally. I have found a obgyn oncologinst who sounds good, but getting in to see these doctors takes months!

I am 45 and I have a big problem. I have a 14 cm mass in my pelvis coming from my right ovary. The Ca 125 test is within normal limits. My other blood tests are OK. ONly the cholesterol level is a bit higher.I`ve been experiencing bloating (not to much - I don`t have a belly), mild sciatic pain down my right leg, gas. I went for a routine OBGYN checkup and the doctor felt something. The CAT scan says I have a 14 cm mass on my right ovary, localized, with no ascites. Till finding out I was living a normal life, with fitness, good apetite - some bloating, gas and heaviness after dinner. I never had nausea, loss of apetite. I put on weight (which I know it is bad sign. I never had spotting between menses or irregular menses. Now I am scared and I am living in hell. I went to Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC and dr. Carol Brown said I have 20-30% chances to be somethung bad. She told me that before the CA 125 test. I am scheduled for surgery on May 15. I fear the worst.

avoid the Deprovara (Sp?) shot that a doc might recommend to shrink an ovarian cyst!  I had a cyst on my right ovary and the Dr. recommended I do the 3 month Deprovara shot (birth control shot - stops your cycle) I agreed to try it and boy did I regret it!  I was in such a depression i was almost suicidal! It was aweful.  Turns out it didn't get rid of my cyst anyway.  It was not a functional cyst (which the shot might have helped) but a Serous Cystadenoma.  After a year of trying to figure it out, that's what the obgyn determined.  I had it removed April 2005 and was fine until just recently. NOw I'm experiencing pain in the same general area and similar symptoms as before cyst removed (bloating, weight gain, pain in side) so I'm headed back to obgyn in 2 weeks for recheck. SHe had warned me following the surgery that it could re-occur (perhaps even on the left ovary) but my left ovary feels fine. It's always my right one that bothers me.  I feel for all of you out there.  It sucks!
