complex ovarian cyst while pregnant

i am a little over 13 weeks into my preg. and an u/s showed that i have a 6.5 cm complex cyst on my right ovary. i've had cysts on an off for the past year and a half and the ones that appear on the right always seem to be the biggest and the complex and/or hemorrhagic ones. i know i've had this cyst before i was preg. but the biggest it ever got was 4 cm. is there a reason why it has gotten bigger with the preg? also, i'm supposed to see a gynecologic oncologist next week so he can further characterize the features of the cyst. my doctor said it is partial fluid and partial cystic. how will this interfere with my preg.?  any answers or comments are greatly appreciated!!!!! thank you.

Hi Bird16, My obgyn just mentioned - if he knew before hand the size of my cyst before my pregnancy, he would definetly remove it. Perhaps, if the cyst getting bigger like in mycase, it might be quite impossible to go through natural labour. Maybe the doctor is trying to assess what sort of cyst on your ovary - and it might giving you an ease of mind during your pregnancy.

Btw, my baby has turned now .... baby's head is down. But, it is still quite risky to go through normal labour. Either way.... I am thanking God everyday, my baby is healthy and I believe nothing is impossible for those who knows God loves them.

My husband adn I are trying to get pregnant adn I was just diagnosed wiht a complex cycist the size of a lemon on my left ovary.  The doctor said to wait 6 weeks for another follow up ultrasound to see if it goes away.  Should we stop trying in the meantime?  The doctor was vague about it?

I am 32 weeks pregnant and obgy said I have a large dermoid on my right ovary (10-12cm) which I found when I was 10 weeks pregnant and he suggested to have it remove during c-section. According to him, the cyst that size blocking my baby to turn (My baby is on breech position), and the chances is 95% I would be having a c-section. At first, I was really hoping the baby would turn ... but now I leave it to God to give the best way possible for me and my baby. The positive side is, the cyst can be remove at the same time.

I thank God the cyst does not harm my baby, I didnt even had any symptoms at first. My baby is perfectly healthy which matter the most. And I believe nothing will affect my ovary once the cyst is removed. You can write to me if you wish ... and I will keep you posted on my journey. (***@****) I pray for you and your baby too.

hey i have had a cyst while pregnant with my first and i have one now and i am pregnant with my second..the first one was huge i refused to have it removed while i was pregnant i chose not to do cause research shows that it is a high risk procedure and i mean imagine that so i waited until my son was born and i had a c section and they removed it at the same time.mine was the size of a grapefruit in the womb and got so big that it ate my ovary.so i did loose a ovary over it but hey i am pregnant with my second n we didn't use anything. My first question to the docter is how he knows what cyst u have bc im telling u i went to high risk dr i was in the military for 4 mnths while i was pregnant and then the civilian dr Every one of them said they could not tell me what kind of cyst it was until the removed it and until the did test even after mine was removed it had to go for testing and i didn't know if it was cancerous or whateva mine ended up being a fibrod but i would ask alot of questions i did have to spend alot of time at the dr i was there every other day and i have a photo album full of ultrasounds they kept a close watch on me and i did heart rate tests everytime i was there my labor was fine and i went into labor and tryed and couldn't go on cause i was having contractions in my shoulders i think i did the smart thing cause regardless i had to get the cyst removed and being cut once was better then twice for me

Hey Ni-ki or anyone,

Does having a large cyst increase the chance of c-section?  I heard large cyst increase the chance of miscarriage.  Also, I heard most cyst starts shrinking at around week 14 to 16.  does any have that experience?

yea my cyst was complex when i got mine drained it was about 12cm and my doctor said i would have been ok to deliver normally and that the cyst has 0 effect on the baby but for you i would talk to your doctor about removing it because you are really early in your pregnancy i mean you can wait til after you deliver you have to wait 6 weeks thats what i have to do but hopefully 6 weeks after i deliver my estrogen levels will be back to normal and the cyst will go away but in your case i wouldn't worry just talk to your doctor about draining it and possibly removing it and see what they say... but don't worry about your baby i was really really worried about mine as well but came to the conclusion there is nothing to worry about and you will be fine just stay positive =) hope this helped if you have any more questions feel free to ask

thanks again for your posts. ni-ki--was your cyst a complex one?  that's what they're saying mine is. i'm supposed to go to a gyn-onc this week to further characterize it, but my doc said it's probably either an endometrioma, fibroma or dermoid cyst, but they just want to make sure because it does have some cystic qualitites to it. i can deal with it having to be removed or drained, hopefully it can wait till after preg. but if not, as long as the baby is okay i'll go through whatever, i'm just worried about them finding out it's not benign. i guess i'll just have to wait and see.

I'll second what ni-ki said, it's about the estrogen.  You body is producing huge amounts right now for the pregnancy.  Good news is that the pregnancy is probably safe no matter what is decided, surgery or watchful waiting.  And the cysts should not interfere with a normal birth is that's what you want.  Don't let the docs talk you into a c-section just because it would be easier for them to get to stuff after the birth.  Give yourself and your baby the best beginning you can, which for me, the midwife, is labor and vaginal birth, and then do the surgery if it is down to that.
Take a deep breath--the odds are in your and your baby's favor that the pregnancy will be fine.
Congratulations!

ok i am here i am... i am actually 32 weeks pregnant and on thursday i had a 12cm cyst on my right ovary i found out at 20 weeks it was 4cm and it just got bigger but it didn't interfer with my pregnancy the doctors pretty much kept track of how big it was getting and pretty soon it got too big and i had to get it drained which i got done on thursday its till at 5cm though and i need to get it surgically removed after i give birth and thats fine with me... i was told that if they had noticed the cyst sooner they could have removed it soo you might want to ask your doctor about that if not i wouldn't worry about it interfering with your pregnancy. The only thing the doctors are worried about is it twisting because it will cut the blood supply off and it will hurt really bad. But since you are not as far along i would ask your doctor about removing it and if they say no then see about draining it. It helped in my situation alot.

ohhh sorry i forgot to answer the part about why its gettin bigger its because when your pregnant you have alot of estrogen in your body and your hormones are alot higher. When your not pregnant and you have your period the same thing happens you have a cyst on your ovary and by the time you are done with it the cyst goes away well since your pregnant your hormones and estrogen levels are higher the cyst tends to grow instead of shrink or go away... mine is going to continue to grow to but i would not worry about anything just talk to your doctor about draining it or removing it as soon as possible

thanks for your responses. it's extremely reassuring to know that 99% of cysts are benign. if anyone else out there has had a similar experience, please let me know  how it turned out for you. i have 6 days to go before i go to the oncologist, and am very nervous. my pregnancy is going along very normally, so i just hope this cyst is something that either will resolve through the pregnancy  or can be handled after----we'll see!!!

Welcome!  I think ni-ki can help you out as she just had a cyst drained and she is due very soon.  Just remember 99% of ovarian cysts are benign! Godspeed

Hello and welcome to the fold.  It sounds like you've got a good handle on this whole cyst thing, but here's a little story I posted the other day.

Today I saw my oncologist for my 2nd followup following surgery to remove a 16.5 cm borderline, stage 1a cyst and TAH. While I was there, my doctor told me about another patient, who just happens to be one of the nurses in my gyno's office.

At 8 weeks pregnant, this poor girl was diagnosed with 2 cysts, 1 on each ovary, grapefruit sized. They did surgery shortly thereafter to remove the cysts and were able to save the pregnancy, however they were unable to 'stage' the cysts because of the pregnancy. So, for 7 months this woman waited to find out if she had ovca or not.

On Monday, she went into labor, delivered a healthy baby and our doc did a TAH and debulking. They were then able to do more looking around and stage everything. Her cysts turned out to be borderline, stage 1a just like mine and she will have no chemo or radiation.

My doctor was so excited, he was just beaming. Things have definitely been going his way and his patient's way lately.

Just made me feel so good, I wanted to share with everyone.
