cyst with septations!....scared

llp
I'm 35. I just had a repeat u/s because previous u/s showed bilateral cysts, 1.9cm on left and 1.1cm on right. This time my u/s showed multiple follicles on the left and a 2.3cm X 1.7cm cyst with septations on the right! This has scared me silly. I thought that septations meant cancer! They don't know if the cyst is the same one as on the previous u/s but if it is it has more than doubled in 8 weeks! I have a family history of pre-menopausal breast cancer. My doctor assures me that septations are common and that he will repeat u/s next cycle. I am scared to death! Are septations more indicative of cancer? Please help!

Thank you ladies for your encouragement. I saw OBGYN today and am having follow-up u/s in 6 weeks. He thinks it is a functional cyst even though it is septated. You are right, the internet can be a helpful tool but it can also be very scary what you find on certain websites. I really appreciate your comments. I am able to relax a bit more.

Septations just mean that the cyst has something other than fluid in it. That means it could be a hemmhoragic cyst, a dermoid, or an endometrioma, etc. You wouldn't see septations if it was just fluid filled. 2.9cm isn't that big yet, and it's been only a month, right? So you could be looking at a 'misfire', or a hemmhoragic cyst. They happen when the cyst doesn't rupture, releasing the egg, so when you have your normal cycle, the cyst bleeds into itself before eventually being reabsorbed.
Watch and wait is common, especially with smaller cysts. I waited from Dec to April before the decision was made that it was not going to reabsorb and it had to be removed. Your gyn will do another TVUS in a month, and check the size of the cyst to see if it's growing, stable, or shrinking.
Hope this helps!

I was also scared to death. When your u/s says "complex cyst with multiple septations", it is scary....and when you GOOGLE on "cyst with septations" it brings up all kinds of scary OVCA websites, however, it also brought up this WEBSITE, which plugged me into a bunch of really helpful ladies who had been through this and then, as WUBBIE3 would say, I was able to ... breathe....

Mine was 11cm on the u/s and was 14cm when I had it removed a few weeks later... it was removed August 7th and was very much benign (serous cystdenoma), so as you are also are reading on this site 99% of cysts are benign. So relax, but see the process through and ask a lot of questions!
