do dermoid cysts get bigger?

Someone mentioned that dermoid cysts grow quickly. Is that true?
I just scheduled an appointment for my Second Opinion for 5/16.... and then after that I was going to make my appointment (with my first doctor) for the surgery...

Is this too long? My doc said we would have to wait 5-6 weeks for a room in the hospital.

are these dermoids cyst worse when they are with in the ovary? instead of outside or attached to the ovary? is a internal ultrasound enough for them to decide to do surgery? or should they give me a ct scan or somthing? i asked my doc this, and he said the ultrasound is sufficent enough if not more acurate.

Hello i had a internal ultrasound and they said they found at dermoid cyst inside my left ovary 2.3cmx2cm. I went to see my gyno, and he said that it has to be removed, and said that he would do it with open surgery, in six weeks time. He has sent me to get a blood test to check if it cancerus, checking the emzens or something along those lines. He also has sent me to get a secound ultrasound to confirm it etc. He said i will require 4 days in hospital and approx two weeks off work. He also said there is a chance they may have to take the ovary, but they will not know until the surgery. Does this sound correct? I am very nervous about the whole thing i am only 23, and havent been to hospital bfore. Regards.

I was wondering about this myself.  I recently had a CT scan back on March 21st because of post op pain from gall bladder surgery.  They ended up finding a 2.2 cm "fatty mass" near my left adnexa.   My surgeon did not seem concerned but told me to follow up next time I had an appt with my gyno.  Well I was a bit concerned and went ahead and made an appt.  She went ahead and did a complete exam and scheduled a pelvic ultrasound.  That was approximately three weeks from the CT scan.  I had to call three times to even get the results, they did not even call.  I had to keep leaving messages before I was finally able to talk to her nurse.  She told me the results of the ultrasound shows a mass approximately 3.6 to 4.4 cm.  I asked if it had grown.  At first she said yes, but as I asked more questions about what to do next she changed her story and stated that no it had not really changed sized, only the CT scan read it differntly from the ultrasound.  She was short, seeming to want to get off the phone.  Needless to say I was not happy.  I talked to my friends, family, etc and they told me to make an appt for a 2nd opinion.  It is on May 9th.  I have to say I am a bit scared but it is nice to see others on here that have gone through this.  I was worried about the change in size.

Some grow and some don't... Mine was 3.6cm when it was found in December, and is still at 3.6cm as of my last TVUS in March. My surgery is May 17th, and unless my gyn finds something weird, my sx is laproscopic.
I guess it just depends on the cyst.

sorry, forgot to mention that they had to take the ovary due to the fact that it was attached to my bladder and bowels.  I had my other ovary removed last May along with a cyst.  I am only 31 and have now had a toatl hysterectomy.  I started an estrogen patch to see how it works.  Kasie

I had to have mine removed by a laporotomly (sp?).  They made the incision right above my bikini line, and it goes all the way across my lower abdmoen.  I was in the hospital for 3 days (but had to go back due to a secondary infection).  It has been 2 weeks since my surgery and I am doing well.  Still some soreness, but overall things are good.  If you have anymore questions, please let me know.  Kasie

Mine was laproscopically - but should have been open.  I was at a surgical center and not a hospital so dr. had to continue with the lap.  My scars are bigger though, 3 inches each.

I just had a dermoid cyst removed two weeks ago, and from my experience, the cyst did grow fast.  When we first found it in the beginning of Feb. it was 2cm., six weeks later it was 9 cm.  Once it reached this size however, it did not grow any more during the two week wait for my surgery.  I will be praying for you that everything is fine!  Kasie

They are strange and yes they do get bigger, I think that they may be slow growers though.  Several ladies have had them for a few years!  I am sure someone with even more knowledge will be along soon.  I had 2 softball sized dermoids removed 12/21/05.  However, I had symptoms for about 1 1/2 years.  So maybe they grow slow.  From the time mine were seen on the us and my surgery was about 6 weeks.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed
