Another teratoma?

Hi all, I don't know if any of you are familar with this or not, but any insight you might have would be appreciated. My daughter had a teratoma on her right ovary two years ago, she was 12.  It was benign (mature)  It was a grapefruit size and she lost her ovary.  Well last week she complained of urinary frequency, so I took her to the primary doctor and he sent her urine for culture and meanwhile put her on antibiotics which she finished.  She finished them on monday last week.   Well,, today she has a fever with no other symptoms like of a cold or flu.  I asked her if she still has the urinary frequency and she said yes, after probing furthur, I found out she has left sided pain when she lays on it for a while.  I am afraid it might be an ovarian problem again.  I am scared and sort of angry because the doctor said she wouldnt be at any higher risk of getting it again.  Does anyone know if having had one puts you at greater risk for getting another one?  I am going to try to take her to the doctor in the morning, maybe to the ER tonight, I am confused at this point.  Thanks guys.  Shannon

Hello Shannon....what a nightmare for you and your daughter....what I have read says that the chance for a "mature teratoma" recurrance is 10% or less...the odds for an "immature teratoma" recurrance is 33%......since she is both in pain and running a fever I think you would be doing the right thing by taking her to the E.R.
Always better safe than sorry. ....please let us know how she is doing.
Peace.

Thanks for your input.  I guess there is an increased risk, it would make sense to me too.  The doctor assured me there was no increased risk at all.  I guess she didn't research it too much.  Doctor's don't know everything.  My husband took her to the ER a little while ago.  I will keep you posted to what happens.  Thanks again.  Shannon

It is tough waiting at home wondering what is going on at the ER when one of your children are there without you....hopefully your husband and daughter will be home soon....or at least you will get a phone call shortly....I am waiting with you....
Peace.

Hi there, well they are back and they did an abdominal ultrasound.  They found what they think is a small functional (ovulatory) type of cyst, but nothing major.  Her urine was negative for infection.  They said the fever was most likely from a virus which just isn't showing any symptoms yet.  They want us to follow up with a gyn.  I guess I was jumping the gun with thinking it was another teratoma.  I guess I will always be a little extra paranoid now that it happened once and she lost an ovary at such a young age.  I dont know what is causing her urinary frequency if its not an infection or an ovary pushing on the bladder. Well anyway, I feel much better knowing it isn't another teratoma!!  Thanks so much for being there for me tonight, I really needed it!  Shannon
