ovarian mass

My Dr. found an ovarian mass (solid) during an ultrasound and later confirmed it was there after an MRI.  The ovarian mass is approximately 5cm.  They also found large fibroids on my uterus.  Fibroids run in my family, my mother had a hysterectomy in her late 20's because of them.  I had the CA125 test done earlier in the week but haven't gotten the results back yet.  I have an appointment with a gyn-oncologist in a few days.  Maybe I'm grasping at straws here but could it be possible that the mass on my ovary is a fibroid?  Has anyone ever heard of that happening?  Thanks.

Ovarian masses, tumors or cysts do not mean cancer...and I think it is great that you have been referred to a GYN/ONC.  Please understand that these doctors have 3 years additional training in gynocological issues and they treat many conditions and/or patients that do not have cancer.  Your doctor is being proactive and sending you to the specialists...and remember it by no means that you have cancer....at 5 cm to 6 cms most doctors choose to operate as at this point the mass/cyst/tumor can start twisting and causing other problems. It isn't the size of the "alien", they watch to see how it grows and changes.

I do not blame you for being scared and apprehensive.  Those are very normal feelings.  You have to try very hard not to waste a good panic....you have yourself worked up believing that there maybe something wrong with you, something horribly wrong, before jumping to conclusions and making yourself nuts, see the doctor, get all your tests done and only then if there is something wrong will have to deal with it.  Most cysts/masses/tumors are benign.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

In January 07 my obgyn found an ovarian mass on my right ovary during a pelvic exam. I had been having some other symptoms such as constipation, gas & extreme bloating.  He did an ultrasound which showed that the mass was solid & that I had a small amount of free fluid. He referred me to a gyn/onc to do the surgery. The mass turned out to be a 10cm benign fibroma.

Wishing you well. Keep us posted on your progress.

Well - I got some good news today - my CA-125 blood work came back and it was a 7 (I understand that a 35 or lower is normal).  What a relief - I've been preparing for the worst.  Now I have another question - if this does turn out to be benign - will they do a total hysterectomy on me if I want it?  I'm 2 years past menopause and have had numerous issues with uterus polyps, ect, in the past.  I want all of this stuff gone!  What do you think my chances are of them agreeing to do so?

Also - thanks for all of your replies - I've really been scared about all of this.  Your support has been appreciated.
