Hi, I'm not sure if they can tell. Have you had your hormones checked? I'm not totally sure just how reliable that is, though. Before surgery they told me I wasn't in menopause. I knew that already as I had my period every month. I wanted more of a check on the levels of the hormones.
I would talk with your doctor to make sure he/she knows that you would like to have children. A hormone check after surgery would possible tell you.
Good luck!
how do you think i can find out if my other ovary is working properly before i go to surgery?
I had one ovary and tube removed in Oct. 2005. All of my doctors told me that it shouldn't make any difference. I have had problems with cysts on my remaining ovary ever since-even while on bc pills. My theory is that everyone is different. You may have problems with cysts on your other ovary, and you may not. A lot depends on what type of cyst you have, which they will not know for sure until you have the surgery. So far my other ovary has not had to be removed and I'm praying that it won't be because I want to have more children. They shouldn't have to remove either ovary unless you have cancer. I hope that everything turns out well for you! :)
As far as I know there is no effects of losing one ovary, your dr would be best to talk to about this.As far as quitting smoking, especially before surgery,is great idea!(I'm a smoker too)and trying to quit (few slip ups)its hard ,but you can do it.
Not only is it good for over all health, you will have less complications during surgery (heart rate/breathing)and recover/heal faster. What kind of surgery are you having, laparscopy? I was advised not to smoke for 24 hrs before procedure. Before I had my appendix out in hospital I was dumb enough to sneak out outside for a cigg because I was so nervous, hour later wheeled in for surgery, they ended up admitting me because my oxygen levels was too low (cuz I smoked right before)best advice...it isnt worth it.Good luck to you,
Stephanie
Hi there. I think the position of the cyst on the ovary has a lot to do with whether or not they will remove the ovary. Mine had to be removed b/c the cyst had ruined it. My cyst, complex, was 4+ and benign (endometriosis). I knew going in that the Dr. may remove the ovary and he said it was useless so it came out. The remaining ovary is supposed to pick up the slack and, after 3 months, I've just had a hormone check and it was all normal. If your remaining ovary is working properly then you should be able to conceive without a problem. (unless there are other issues, of course)
As far as the weight issue goes...everyone is different. I didn't gain or lose any weight but I was stuck at the same weight for about 6 months while on Weight Watchers. It was frustrating until they found the cyst and it explained a lot.
If you can, try to quit smoking sooner than later. It really can cause so many problems with your anesthesia, surgery and recovery. It affects your whole body not just your lungs. Your heart, blood pressure, lungs will all improve if you can quit.
I started exercising VERY lightly at about week 3. I was used to walking and jogging on my treadmill but could not do what was "normal" to me. I just walked slowly for about 20 minutes until my stamina came back. Then I would test myself and basically listen to my body. You don't want to over-do it b/c it causes setbacks and I found the fatigue lasted longer than expected if I did too much.
Good luck to you!
Lori
my ca125 was 21 and its a complex ovarian cyst and its in the middle of my ovary 3.5cm
I'm sorry but I only can try to provide you feedback on one of your questions. My 15 yr. old daughter was dx with ovca in 12/06. The surgical team originally thought they were going to remove both ovaries and possibly a full hysterectemy. As it turned out she just had her right ovary removed. Talking with the surgical specialists as well as an onoc/obgyn specialist from Roswell Park Cancer Institute they said the lost of one ovary will not impact my daughter in any way. They said the removal of one ovary has a similar effect on the body that the removal of one kidney has. That is there is no effect. In fact they said conception can still occur with as little as 1/4 of one ovary left and hormones are produced at acceptable levels with as little as 1/10 of one ovary left. I hope this helps and puts you more at ease.
Take care and good luck,
Bob
Unless the cyst comes back malignant, why would you remove the entire ovary????
You have lots of good questions, all that should be discussed with your doctor.
Depending on the size of the cyst and pathology report, there is no reason why they would have to remove the cyst. There are conditions that create cysts and cause them to continusouly happen, but, there are ways to prevent them from happening, again, please discuss this with your doctor.
Good luck!!!!
