starting to freak out...

So, on 1/6/07 I had a ct scan which showed a 10cm dermoid and a 6.5 dermoid.  I have surgery scheduled for 2/14/07.  My CA125 was "within normal limits."  It was my choice to schedule the surgery so far out as I have 2 sons in the Navy (hence Navymom) and I will be traveling to see 1 son shortly after surgery after he gets home from Iraq. But I'm really starting to worry.  I was diagnosed with a dermoid teratoma in 1990 and had my right ovary removed.  This time it will be a full hystorectomy.  From what I have read, the chances of this being begnin again are pretty good.  Does anyone know if this is true or not???  I know that if my doctor felt I couldn't wait, he wouldn't let me.  But I am freaking out...  Am I just being a worrywort????

I'm 42 and have been having the night sweats for about 8 months.  The clincher of my story is that I went for a routine gyn exam on 5/23/06 and was told my the midwife I saw that I was fine.  I kept having the heavy periods, facial hair... and a whole gambit of different problems and I kept calling the doctor back every month.  I finally spoke to my primary care doctor and she referred me to a different gyn.  This new doctor said the dermoids were there back during that exam in May.  I have since filed a complaint with the OPMC against the midwife because my new gyn said I had clear signs that something was wrong.  I just kept thinking that I was starting menopause.  I have a history a cancer in my family and I am not so happy about doing the hormones.  Especially since my sister, 2 cousins and an aunt on my mom's side have all had breast cancer.

Oh yeah, and today is day 1 of being smoke free.

Good luck with your surgery and keep me posted!

Hi everyone, I'm having a small Dermoid cyst removed Feb. 13, my understanding is that they usually are benign. I do worry because I am 63, I don't know if the older you are your risk increases. Good luck to all!

Hi Navy mom :)  Your story is very similar to mine. I had my right ovary out 6 years ago because of a large dermoid cyst. Also had my uterus removed 3 years ago due to fibroids and endometriosis. Now I have a complex cyst on my left ovary. I have surgery scheduled for February 14th. I had a CA125 done and it was under 21. From what I have been reading on this forum, most of these types of cysts are usually benign.  I am 36, and I just keep thinking that maybe my age will be on my side. But it is scary until you find out for sure.
This cyst has been present for a year. It was found in Dec. of 06. My doctor gave me the option to wait and look at it again in 6 weeks, or go in and look now. Needless to say, I decided to go now. I just want to know and I just want to be rid of the pain and discomfort that it causes.  I am sure you can relate.
Another concern that I have is going into menopause early. I guess I will cross that bridge if and when I have to.  Good Luck to you.

The chances of your dermoid being benign are about 98%. Sounds pretty good to me :)
