Are 9 year old boys often extremely moody?

My son is 9 (10 in Feb). He has just started back to school, fourth grade.  He is having trouble falling asleep and also is waking up at night (4 am) and having trouble falling back asleep (30-45 minutes). This has been for about 2-4 weeks, 3-5 times per week. In addition,  He's rather indecisive about everything from candy choices to free time activities. When he finally makes his choice, he often changes it within minutes , or sulks about wishing he had changed his mind.
He plays an instrument and has for four years.  Yesterday I suggested changing music teachers and he really didn't answer me  or discuss it, so I brought it up later with his father in the discussion. While we talked about it, him lightly talking part in the discussion, he started to cry and got very upset with us for "even talking about something he never even asked to have happen".   I apologized and explained I was only trying to keep his interest in the instrument and make it fun for him. Three minutes later he was laughing and joking without a trace of the entire thing ever happening.  Is this emotional rollercoster normal at this age?  am I correct to be concerned about this and the sudden trouble  in sleeping?

Maybe he is Happy with who he has as his Music teacher so why would you want to change it, perhaps he thinks  you are trying to control  what he is doing, if its working  why bother as he said to you"even talking about something he never asked to happen. ,A lot of children are indecisive ,and maybe he could read if he has trouble going to sleep ,how do you know he wakes at 4amdoes he wake you, if its just a phase tell him to read till he goes back off, what time does he go to bed ,is it too early.
