Slowly Changing Behavior

My son was in preschool until summertime then we pulled him out so he could be on "summer vacation" before starting kindergarten. I stayed home with him and we did normal vacation stuff, played outside, played inside, activities, movies, and played video games. When it came to the week before school starting my husband and I explained to our son that we had to start back on our school routine like when he was in preschool. Since then he's been cranky and irritable and starting to act like a toddler. At school he's very hyper and gets "put on yellow" because he is either talking or not listening when he's supposed to. He is not being aggressive towards anyone and doesn't say bad words but he is showing attitude. He's also not trying very hard to do homework with us. He knows how to write his name and read some words and knows the alphabet and counts past 20, but when he is upset he says he doesn't know any of it. I'm scared he won't like school as it goes on and will suffer academically. What's some ways we can encourage him to be more positive? He is upset because he can't play him games or watch TV when he wants like before on vacation (after he's done his chores and ate and gotten dressed and teeth brushed) he's very sweet and polite usually but right now he is being testful. Thanks for any advice.

He is in kindergarten and has homework?  Or, you are just trying to work with him about the alphabet and counting?  I'd loosen up on that.  Home should be for fun, at this age, not for a little classroom.  He will not suffer academically later if you are not doing schoolwork with him at home at age 5.
