Phobias are a type of anxiety disorder where one has a strong, irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger. Discuss topics including social phobias, claustrophobia and treatment options.
My phobia is cockroaches... Even the name creeps me out. I've always been afraid of them since I was little, but it's gotten so much worse. If I see one I won't eat. I won't even kill one. They are terrifying. Everyone thinks I'm just being a baby, but they seriously creep me out...I won't even sleep if I see one. I had a bad experience while I was pregnant this past year. I was sleeping and had a dream something was crawling on me. Well I was still half asleep and looked at my arm and saw something black. My first thought was a spider, but then I realized what it was..I jumped off the couch and swung my arm so I didn't have to touch it. I felt so dirty so I washed my arm for a while. To this day I am terrified of it happening again. I mean I've always been afraid of one even touching me and then I woke up to one. Makes it very hard to sleep. I Know this is stupid to a lot of people. I feel like no one understands how horrified I am of them.
In many areas where they are present people in general
find them unpleasant and disgusting. Many apartment buildings
such as the one I live in have an exterminator to spray for them.
They aren't particularly harmful or dangerous but many people
would react that way.
There are pragmatic ways that will help keep out of
the house such as eliminating standing sources
of water as that is often what attracts them.
There are some good informational websites online.
If they do become a problem generally an exterminator
is needed as they have built up a tolerance to standard insect spray..
