This was a common problem when DD was little. 1st DON'T use rice cereal, use barley cereal, 2nd rehydrate prunes then puree them (doctor said this is different then baby food prunes) 3rd try pear juice and then when this didn't work we had to give her a glycerin suppository (usually every 3 days). Once she started eating cereal and other baby food the problem resolved and never came back.
PS she was breastfed.
Good Luck
If you haven't already, you can try 2 tsp of DARK Karo mixed w/ 2 ounces of luke warm water. It has to be the dark too. It can't be the light. Found that out the hard way :) This always worked for my kids. If not, then the prune juice should do it. It did w/ mine. Problem w/ that is just getting it down them because mine did not like it at all. The dropper sounds like a good idea.
When dd was a couple months old, she started getting constipated, and nothing worked at all...so, we went to the ped. and he gave us a prescription for this liquid and we gave it once a day, and it worked miracles...it is kinda like the water/sugar mix, but with other things in it. and it is specifically made for babies...I will go try to find it and let you know what it is called...
Lexi has severe, chronic constipation. I tried prune juice, karo syrup, apple juice, water, sugar water, pediatric glycerin suppositories...nothing worked. :( She still had very hard stools that sometimes made her bleed afterwards. I even resorted to the thermometer trick after that didn't work. I talked with her pediatrician after it started becoming a regular thing of her not being able to use the bathroom. He suggested we use Miralax. We put 1/2 to 1 tsp in her bottle once a day and it keeps her regular and keeps her stool soft enough to not cause pain. It's been a godsend! I hated the idea of giving it to her, but I figure it's better than her not being able to go at all!
I would try the medicine dropper trick first and maybe a suppository. Poor, Aubryana!
I'm thinking maybe doing what someone said on FB and giving her a little prune juice in a medicine dropper...
Hmmm...interesting Heather. Well I can't get her to take a bottle, I actually gave her a half and half juice/water mix earlier to see if she'd take it cause water didn't go over well, even put a little sugar in the water (old supposed to cure constipation trick) and that didn't help. I tried a sippy cup too, but she just doesn't like them...
My son had this issue when starting solids and I was breastfeeding at the same time. I would always give him a sippy cup of water with his food. This helped a lot actually. It keeps things moving along.
It was the opposite for my son though. He would poo every other day but after solids with the water then he goes every day, even twice a day.
Just make sure you keep her fluids up with the solids she is having!
Babies pooing cycles change so much from newborn, once I put my 3 on solids I recall they would go a few days and nothing and I'd start to panic, then bam they'd have 2 or 3 pooey nappies the next day. Her system will get used to it and her body will figure out when it needs to get rid of waste. Just wait you have all this to come again with potty training!
