Had my doctors appointment today- I need you ladies:(

Ok so I posted a few weeks ago about my mid point ultrasound that was done at 17.5 weeks. Well baby girl has ecogenic bowel. I was told that it could be nothing and was advised to take a blood test to determine if baby has downs or cystic fibrosis. Well I took the test a few weeks ago and tried calling for the results and was told that only a doctor can give those to me:( Well since the doctor never called I had assumed that everything was fine. Well today I found out the had been trying to call for the last week and a half. My results were abnormal:( I broke down and started bawling to my doctor. The results were 1:170, but I was told they were really higher because of abnormal ultrasound. I know there is a chance that my baby is fine but in the back of my head I am fearing the worst. I have an appointment to talk with a genic conselor again to set up an amnio. I have always turned down those stupid blood test because I know that they can scare you when nothing is wrong. And now I take it and sure enough. I called my MIL after my appointment today to ask her to watch my kids while I go see the genic conselor on Monday and she asked what I was going to do if baby does have downs? I almost ripped her head off!! What am I going to do? Seriously!! I asked her what she would do and she said she didnt know because she has never been in that situation before. I wanted to kill when she said that it would be alot of work and hinted abortion!! I dont know how I will do it but I will have to because there is no way that I could ever abort!! I feel her move for goodness sakes!! Not that I could ever do it even if I werent so far along, I just dont belive in it.  I just need some hope ladies. Has anyone ever had abnormal ultrasound and triple screen test and nothing be wrong???? I just feel that I had three perfect and healthy boys and now I get  the girl that I have always wanted and look what happens?? Have I tempted fate one too many times????

Whatever results you get back, feel free to message me because IF it's positive (and I don't wish it on anyone) your gonna want to talk to someone who's gone thru it before and can tell you A) what you can expect and B) be there for support when you need it.

Amnio's have a 99.9% accuracy, it's VERY rare for there to be a false positive or false negative.
What they'll do is take one of the baby's cells (usually a skin cell) that they get from the amniotic fluid, and break it open. They then use a Dye on the chromosomes and sort them out.

and I'll send you a picture showing the results of my amnio with TJ. it shows the actual chromosomes.

just wanna let you know I am keeping you in my prayers today! I also know a woman who had the amino and they told her that her son would have ds, and he doesnt have it at all.

I take care of my aunt who is 43 and mentally retarded. It is a struggle, but I love her very much and wouldnt trade her for anything. God puts everyone on this earth for a purpose.

I know this is a scary time, and like you I have never wanted to do the tests for the same "false positive" issues.  I don't know if you've ever heard this poem, but if you search "Welcome to Holland" online it will come up.  It is a story about expectations and living with a special needs child, and it brought me to tears the first time I heard it.  I hope everything goes well today and all this worry was for nothing, but if not God still has a plan for that special little girl you have.  Good luck and take care!!!

The amnio doesn't feel pretty lemme tell you. It caused me to cramp one big time (contraction) but it was the first time I felt my son kick. he hated it!

It was over quickly and I had no complications. Please let me know how it goes!

Thank you so much for your kind words! You dont know how much better I feel. So this weekend has flown by. I have been trying to stay busy and DH has been hogging the computer so I havent been able to update. My appointment is tomorrow (monday) at 2pm. I just looked at my appointments and realized that I am scheduled for an U/S at 3pm too. I just had one less than 3 weeks ago so im not sure if they are going to do the amnio at the same time or not. I also have to get a shot of RoGham(sp?) Im so nervous. I will post more when I get home tomorrow. I wonder how much the amnio will hurt?? I explained it to DH and he looked like was going to get ill. He had no clue what an amnio was..............................Wish me luck ladies.

although the results gave you a 1 in 170 chance, that leaves 169 in 170 that will be ok. Those are pretty good odds. I think you'll feel a lot better when you've seen the specialists over this. I've read similar posts where mums have been left feeling terrified only to go to specialists and have more test that have shown baby is perfectly ok.

I am pregnant with twins and when I was in my 12th week, I had an abnormal NT scan and got risk of Down of 1:22 for one girl and 1:48 for the other girl.  I had a placenta biopsy at 12w+2d (placenta biopsy is similar to amnio but instead of taking out amniotic fluid, they take placenta material out with the needle) to haev chromosome testing done.  Both babies have no chromosome issues.

Im sorry to here this - you must be very scared right now.  Remember though, that the odds are still in your baby's favor - a 1 in 170 chance that baby will have DS means that out of 170 baby's with those test numbers 169 will NOT have DS.  I understand that the odds change because of the ultrasound but Im just giving you a feel for a way to interpret the numbers.

Martikadragon has  made some very good points and provided excellent data.  I worked many years with children who had special needs (DS, Celebal Palsy, Epilepsy etc) and this was one of the most fulfilling times of my life.

My aunt had a false positive on one of those tests, and was told later her daughter probably had d/s...She's now a healthy, smart, normal almost 8 year old. Not a single problem...I wish you the best of luck, only time will tell...don't stress. No one is perfect. All babies are beautiful and precious no matter what. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and I am a religious person, so I say that God works in mysterious ways...and doesn't ever give someone a challenge that they can't handle. If you are religious whatsoever, you should know that He knows you can handle whatever He throws your direction. But like I said, don't stress I'm sure everything will be fine, no matter the outcome. I applaud you for your reaction to your MIL...mine is the same way. I had breast feeding issues with my son and she sent me a site to shaken baby syndrome. Like I would EVER attempt to shake him period, let alone kill my own child...that's just sick! But I really wanted to slap her because the first baby on the list's name was Elijah...same as my son.

Here's the site address for the NDSS or National Down Syndrome Society. They have video's, tutorials, information and everything else.
Joy is right, I have an 8 month son born with down syndrome... I'm 22 years old and he is our first baby.

It's been one H E L L of a ride since he was born but I wouldn't trade it for anything because he's my beautiful boy.
It is OK If your baby has DS and you will mourn for that perfect girl you always wanted... but guess what?  It's OK
Babies with DS are MORE than perfect, they've got %1 more than any other person on the planet!
DS can come with alot of health issues sometimes, Thyroid, heart, bowel problems, etc. But you can get thru it. You have a local DSA chapter in your town I'm sure. DSA is Down Syndrom Awareness and your hospital can get you their information.. They can help you thru alot.
If your baby has D/S PM me with any questions you might have. I've gone thru it now and have experience with it.

You need to know~ IF The baby has DS she will be a very challenging little baby at first.  These kids can grow up to be anything, and they can graduate high school and even go to college. Women with D/S DO have the ability to have babies and they have a %25 or 50percent chance of passing it on.
The skin problem Joy mentioned IS unrelated. It's a rare one 1:300000 ppl have it.

TJ got the brunt of everything. He got the skin problem, Down syndrome, 3 holes in his heart, Congenital heart disease, congenital lung disease, he's prone to infection, and we think he's hearing impaired. (my mom and I are fluent in Sign language so its not a serious thing)
JUST Because my son went thru this doesnt mean YOUR baby will if she has DS. k?
90% of these kids fall into the mild to moderate range. You won't know which level she'll be until she gets older around 1 yr or so.
Everytime I look at my baby's face I smile because he's such a miracle. He nearly died 3 times and didn't!
You won't be hated or looked down upon for being upset. It' s normal and typical. about 1/2 of babies with D/S Have a heart problem. Sometimes med's can correct it OR they may need open heart surgery.

You know, the day I found out my son had D/S I went online to one of my forums and saw a post from a 19 year old girl who just aborted her baby because she had down syndrome. It broke my heart, but I can also understand where she was coming from.
He's 8 months old and ppl think he's closer to 3 months. He's so tiny and perfect in every way! good luck and your in my prayers!

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. I will be praying for you. You seem like a strong woman!! And I have heard that those tests are not always accurate. I honestly, would never be able to do any of those tests. I believe God does everything for a reason and He won't give you more than you handle. Hang in there! I'm sure your baby girl is just fine! (((HUGS)))

*And martikadragoon knew he had DS before he was born and chose to not abort. If you don't believe in it, don't do it. Your child is a blessing whether they have one extra chromosome or not.

You don't tempt fate at all.

Those tests are not entirely accurate. The amnio will be more conclusive. I know martikadragoon's son was born with Down Syndrome and a rare skin condition that isn't associated with DS.

I LOVE DS people. They seriously are the most happy and loving people you'd ever meet. Just take things one day at a time. Having DS doesn't make your baby less perfect. They are exactly who they are intended to be. *HUGS*

try not to stress.  those tests often comes back with abnormal finding but remmeber it is just a tst saying 1 out of some number.  it is not a definite.  many many have false positives.  try ot relax cause stressing will make the baby stressed.  get the amnio if that is what will help and i bet it will be fine.  1 out of 170 is still low.

Wish I knew the right thing to say!  How stressful this must be for you!  Try to hang in there!  I know a lot of people do say that the blood test can be wrong...I hope and pray for you that it is!

I know at least six women, personally, who have had false positive results and went on to have a perfectly healthy baby.
Each of them went thru a great deal of stress, as you are, with the not knowing.  (Some had the amnio, some did not.)

I am sorry you are going thru this.  Having three healthy kids is a really good sign for you, genetically, so I would say your odds of a healthy baby are high.  Don't feel you are tempting fate; my DH says that sometimes, since we have 3 healthy kids, and my doctor said actually the reverse is true: having healthy kids is a good sign that you will continue to have healthy babies.

Good luck; how soon can you get the amnio?

With my son, I had the test. They told me there was a good chance something was wrong. Later, I had another ultrasound and it turns out he was small for gestational size and the weeks when the blood test were done were miscalculated and really the numbers were ok. I did not really stress, and I figured I would love my baby no matter what and I never had that feeling something was wrong.

With my daughter, when it came time to do the test, I passed. I told them no thanks and signed a waiver. Both my kids are healthy and perfect.

I wish you the best of luck!

You poor thing. Try not to stress, I know easier said than done. I am the same way as you I could never abort my baby EVER. I always denied those blood tests too. Just don't lose hope. Those blood tests are NOT always right and I'm SURE you will get responses on here from women who got the same results and their babys turned out fine.
