I HATE Medicaid (off topic)

I am a law-abiding citizen who pays taxes. I don't drink, do drugs, abuse my children... I'm a clean-cut, straight woman! My husband is earning his pastorate right now and we don't make enough to afford health insurance for all four of us. So my DH and I have our own insurance while our children are on Medicaid.

I got a letter to re-investigate eligibility on Jan. 1st saying, "Please return this by Jan. 1st or your coverage will end!"). Well I freaked and called my caseworker in hopes that we could do it over the phone. I left a message. She NEVER called me back. I sent the paperwork in late anyway.

This Monday, the 14th, I got another letter saying, "Failure to submit paperwork requires you to request a hearing if you do not agree with this. If you do not respond by Jan. 14th your child's coverage will end on Jan. 14th."

WHAT THE HECK?!?!?!? Why am I getting the paperwork ON the day it is due??? I've left THREE messages, two of which are with my caseworker's supervisor because my caseworker did this "not calling" when my second daughter was born (you're supposed to call after the birth and get them put on Medicaid over the phone). My 2nd DD didn't get covered until she was 8 weeks old because of my caseworker's failure to call me back.

I am so fuming mad. I was crying today (something I NEVER do). My MIL must have sensed something because she called in the middle of my hyperventilating and I started crying on the phone with her.

Not only did the caseworker not call me back. The SUPERVISOR will not call me back either! So now I have to go downtown to the nasty courthouse and sit for HOURS to see a caseworker and REDO everything. I'm so flaming mad. Sorry for the tirade. Just had to vent!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, I'm kind of in that boat right now, my caseworker doesn't call me back either, and as far as right now, their office moved and I don't know where they moved too...My dr has seem to be the same way so far, I need an ob and a referall for one and he hasn't called me back yet...so if I don't hear from him by monday I will deff give that office a call. But yeah, I'm not sure why caseworkers don't answer their phones...or like in certain times in the month she'll send us paper work, but then yet it won't have my phone number on it, and we've given her our phone number more then once!  Its really confusing!  But yeah, I understand where you're coming from!

Boy do I understand.  I got paperwork for my every so many months mail in review at the end of december...said to have it in by the 15th...SO when I had my review for other benefits on the 10th I took it in and hand delivered it...it was put in my file.  So this mornign I check my po box and get a letter saying that I failed to return it and I now have until the 31st or coverage will end then...Ok...they've had the d@mn thing for a week now...morons.  My case worker won't call me back either...I just keep calling till the jerk answers the phone.

I know what you are going through, except I never got any paperwork saying they cancelled my daughters insurance.  i found out when i brought her to the doctor when she was sick.  I have been fighting with that place for months now, and i just got some paperwork, late of course sent it in, and they sent it back b/c i forgot to circle one thing, "prefered one or Community health"  You think the lady could have called and asked me and circled it herself but no she sent it back.  So i put it in the mail the day i got it but its already late so my daughter probabley wont have insurance until April because the paper had to be in my Jan 15th for coverage to start on the 1rst.  Skylynn has now missed her 2 year check up b/c the doctor wont see us without Insurance, so when she does have coverage she will probably need a ton of shots and everythign else because she is now behind on them.  I also work, he donor pays $13 for child support, its supposed to be a week, but its more like whenever he feels like it....what the hell can i do with $13.  It cost more then that a DAY at daycare.  I work, get no state assistance other then medical for her, and do what i am supposed to so WTF?

Sorry for ranting.

We were on food stamps but they wanted my husband to get, and I quote, "a real job" and go to job placement services, take classes, and waste not only HIS time but other companies' time by filling out FIFTEEN applications. The problem isn't that he doesn't HAVE a job, it's that the ministry doesn't pay enough!

We're in the inner city. Our congregation is mostly kids from the Sudan (whose parents don't attend) and people from the projects. They don't HAVE money to help support the church. But this is my husband's calling. I don't think the government has any right to call the shots on how we are to live if we're already living right.

I can understand why they want people to get into the job placement program, totally! But don't tell me my husband, who is a full-time student AND employee, that he has to do what THEY want. So we just dropped food stamps, hoping we'd make it. And we have. Our cupboards are never bear, thank God.

It just frustrates me in this respect with Medicaid because it is about my CHILD. You don't mess with a woman's child!!! I feel like I'm failing in some way. We couldn't buy groceries if we had to pay for their medical ourselves. Please, oh please, God help me!

I'm so sorry Joy.  That's just awful.  I hate government assistance for that very reason.  It is so hard to get it seems.  But I could get on my soap box about that one so I'll leave it alone.  I wish I knew what else to say, but I don't.  My family has insurance but we pay out the wazoo for it.  It's just crazy.  And our kids get sick so much, so add the co pays on top of that and it's rediculous.  A month or so ago, we must have spent like $1,000 in one month on medical; if you include what we pay for insurance, the copays, and the prescriptions.  No wonder we couldn't pay our bills that month.  Oh, and it was late November, early December (right before Christmas).  My hb was working multiple jobs just so our kids could have Christmas.  I know it stinks!!!

Bless your heart, I have to say the medicaid office here is fairly good about that stuff. I had that happen to me once and I called them and talked to the receptionist lady and she got everything straight and gave me my "reinterview" that day with a new caseworker. I am so sorry you are having to go thru this mess, you are so sweet and have to be one of the most caring women I have ever met. What I would do is take the envelope and paperwork to the office and tell them that you have called and document what times you call, they can check the messages back, and maybe a or the supervisor can help you out and get it taken care of girl. Let me know what happens.

Ha! Glad I could help.  I, like you, don't feel that we deserve it more than anyone either, but when you have a career where you watch people consistantly abuse the health care system while spending our hard earned tax dollars, it can be extremely difficult not to fuss.

FDMedic, at least I don't feel like I'm being "singled out" anymore! Thanks for your story. I don't necessarily want to say I deserve it more than anyone else, but I feel like people who abuse the system get help all the time, but those of us who are doing it right get the shaft. Arg!

I completely understand and agree.  I'm a firefigher/paramedic at a local fire department and my wife is a paramedic with the local ambulance service.  Neither of us make a very good living, and our first child was on medicaid.  An identical thing happened to us and when we appealed or whatever 'they' called it, we were found ineligible.  Such a glorious system we have.  My wife and I work on people day in and day out who appear very undeserving of this assistance, but when we actually need it, we can't get it.

Hope everything works out for you.
