No greent tea... now what???

Well I read that Green Tea is not the healthiest choice for pregnant women.... but I would like something hot in the morning....  I don't drink coffee and I can't do hot chocolate anymore because any time I eat chocolate I get sick (that started about 6 days before I got a positive HPT).  Is regular tea ok?  Any other ideas?

Hmmm.... I guess every store and every person has their own opinions.  I'll just ask my doctor and go by what she says.  (I'm not a big ginger person anyways).  These days, it seems like everything is bad for you in one way or another, no matter if you are pregnant or not.

No we don't have a whole foods.  But I'm sure there are stores here that I can go to and find something that will be adequate for me.  I have to talk to my doctor tomorrow just to confirm everything.

Do you have a Whole Foods in your area? I know they have a selection of motherhood teas that are safe for pregnant and nursing moms. The ginger tea is great cold or hot and treats morning sickness.
I'm glad you posted this because I drink about 4 glasses of green tea a day! As soon as I read your post I dumped out my glass and filled it with water instead.

I am totally w/ everything4reason....

I think we pregnant women oftentimes take things too literally and way too far...

How did WE ever survive??!! =D

You know our parents did things MUCH differently! =)

I drink what I want. I limit my caffiene intake to about 2 per day. I have a coffee in the am and 1 soda w/ lunch..  That's not going to hurt anybody..,.

We all do what we think is best, so do whatever you are comfortable with..

This is just MY opinion.. =P

I agree that in moderation it is probably ok.

However, I was just stating what I have read on numerous sites (not just one).  I was just asking a simple question.

- evthing4reason - you do not need to voice your opinion about me asking a simple question.  If you feel the need to rant, please start your own thread.  It is my first time being pregnant and I hope that you would respect my concerns.  I would not have posted anything (especially on this forum) if I did not do my own research.  I was also hoping for a little more insight from other people as well as other ideas for a hot drink.

Pregnant women would be wise to limit the amount of green tea they drink during pregnancy, and should be careful about taking any green tea supplements

"Wise to limit the amount"

Again, i'm saying as pregnant women we take things to far sometimes. But yet don't stop to consider other things in everysay life, such as
Do you only eat free range meat and eggs? what about all the growth hormones
Drink pop?

Consume products with asprrtame???(diet pop, suger-free gum, flavored water) That's a real big no-no. Any articifal sweatners are totally off-limits, but most pregnant women have no problem ignoring that reccomendation

Do you only use natural cleaning agents?
Do you burn candles?
Have you eaten sandwhich meat while pregnant?
Colored your hair?
painted  your fingers or toes?
of course all your food must be organic...and fresh live foods only, no process or refined foods.
Your clothes...and your baby's clothes too must only be organic cotten.

Oh and I hope  you're not planning on using diapers, you must be using cloth diapers because otherwise you are exposing your baby to many hazardous chemicals linked with dispoable diapers

Cause there's sure to be something written somewheres about all these things saying you shouldn't have/do during pregnancy.

Sorry for the rant...I just get fed up people get paraoid after reading one research finding...I'm actually sure i can find lots that say a moderate amount of green tea is fine during pregnancy probably there's one out there  that even reccomends it

Exactly what I read...I stay away from it!  I also stay away from caffeine other than the amounts found in chocolate here and there =)

I'm not worried about the caffeine part, but I've seen posts that all say the same thing....

Pregnant women would be wise to limit the amount of green tea they drink during pregnancy, and should be careful about taking any green tea supplements. Green tea is rich in antioxidants, and has a host of health benefits relating to dental health, blood sugar levels, cholesterol, and weight loss. But researchers have found, whilst examining the active constituent of green tea, the epigallocatechins, or EGCG for short, that it may affect the way the body uses folate. Folate is important for pregnant women as it prevents neural tube birth defects in babies.

The problem of green tea during pregnancy is that the EGCG molecules are structurally similar to a compound called methotrexate. Methotrexate is able to kill cancer cells by chemically bonding with an enzyme in the body called enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). Healthy people have this enzyme also - it is part of what is called the folate pathway, which is the pathway, or steps, the body takes to transform nutrients like folate into something that can be used to support its normal functions.

But this chemical similarity means that the EGCG in green tea also binds with the enzyme DHFR, and when it does this, it inactivates this enzyme. When this enzyme is inactivated, the ability of the body to use folate is going to be affected. How much green tea is able to be consumed, or precisely how much folate absorption is affected, is unclear. Though the research article did say that drinking 2 cups of green tea a day can stop cancer cells (which is what methotrexate is targeting) from growing.

The good news on caffeine drank during pregnancy, from coffee and tea, is that a moderate amount is fine. Two studies, one by Danish scientists who interviewed more than 88,000 pregnant women, and the other by the Yale University School of Medicine, had similar findings on caffeine during pregnancy.

Yeah...I was drinking like two cups of green tea a day while I had my horrid cold at like 8w pregnant and then I read that it is scary...I wont rehash it because it was online and who knows what is true and not true...I decided against it and I just have regular decaf tea.  My ob said to stay away from herbal teas even if they are decaf.

I didn't know that about green tea... I have been drinking green tea throughout my pregnancy! :)  I think that there is soooo much out there that pregnant woman are not "supposed" to drink/eat you could drive your self crazy worrying about all of it.  But, honestly... I really don't think that one cup in the morning will be harmful.  Of course, I would consult with your doctor prior to taking any advice on here :)  Good luck and I am all about the green tea...

oh... if you have a Trader Joe's by you, they sell decaffeinated green tea (assuming you are worried about the caffeine).  I just checked... that is the green tea that I have been drinking :)

Don't worry about it. Especially if you are just having 1 cup of Green Tea in the morning. I could see if you were having 5-6 cups a day. When i'm pregnant it is the only time a crave caffine drinks...so yes i allow myself the odd cappicino, and green tea and pop. In fact some of the other herbal teas i normally have but avoid during pregnancy i have begun drinking again..in moderation
