OT-premarin

Has anyone ever heard of this drug called Premarin? I was given it after the surgery yesterday and according to the leaflet it's just a female hormone. I assume Estrogen? I asked a few doctors and got different answers from each one.

I've not talked to a ped yet. I frankly despise her current one (I made a journal about it if you care to read it) and refuse to call him for anything. We were told to wait till she is 6 months before changing (since they are getting her blood work back and whatnot as well) I'll call a pharmacy and ask them. Thanks. :)

Arnica oil and pill , natural, will prevent scar tissue as does Evening Primrose oil! YOu can get them at a health food store and Whole foods has them! Rite Aid has the evening Primrose oil.

Did you ask the pediatrician? Good luck girl, I know you do not want scar tissue since you only have one baby! I know you say you might not have anymore but never say never;)  That is a hard decision, I do not know what I would do... It sounds like it would be less then the miny pill though, call the pharmassist though and ask that specific question! That would be the breaker for me I think.

Well I talked to the doctors about it today and they said they wanted me to use it to help prevent scar tissue and for my uterus to heal a little more quickly. She said they put me on the lowest dose available to prevent any harm happening. (Apparently what's in birth control is 3x higher than what they put me on) I was also told it's my choice if I want to use it or not and if I choose not to we'll see how it goes and take it from there.

They said to pump and dump for 24 hours, but that wasn't an option. She had gone 9 hours and refused a bottle and all formula. (I hadn't been given enough time before surgery to pump anything and had nothing saved since she doesn't take bottles) so I pumped what I had, dumped it once and nursed her as soon as I pumped. The surgery was for a stuck IUD and they removed some tissue it had damaged. Thank you so much for all this information! I'll call Monday and see about what else they want me to use (if anything) and why I still need to use it.

It is a synthetic form of estrogen and is used for hormone replacement for penopause.

That being said estrogen in your body thins the uterus out, and is the hormone kicked in for AF to come, then in your luteal ohase the progesterone kicks in for O and thickens the uterine walls so baby can attach.

I know many woman who's breastmilk deminishes some during that time of the month and I also know that when you O is the highest time yoru milk will or can drop some for a day or two. Lots of women, not all cuz I did not drop but if you get pregnant while BF your progesterone keeps going up so well their milk supply can completly dry up. Like I said that did not happen to me. Now with AF ( I have nursed 3 others before Henry) nothing happened at AF with my others but with Henry it has taken 5 months for AF to show up regular and the last two times I did have trouble with my let down but not milk supply. But I do know that estrogens is also one hormone they used to puimp into meat and that it has made girls develope earlyier then they used to! YOur little one will get it! It is a strong hormone and I would use caution why he even gave it to you in the first place and also ask a LC and your pediatrician if that is something you should even take. Hopefully you do not really need it or there will be something else that can ehlp with whatever yoru problem is, Try going to the health food store and ask them to suggest soemthing for your issues.

I did not know you had surgery and I hope you are healing OK and are fine!!

Hoe long did you have to pump and dump for? I might have to have neck surgery for a disc and am so worried to not nurse him!

I was looking up Premarin for you on several websites and they all say not to take this drug while breastfeeding. I also can't figure out why they put you on it when you aren't going through menopause. What surgery did you have if you don't mind me asking?

This is copied and pasted from drugs. com

FDA pregnancy category X. This medication can cause birth defects. Do not use Premarin if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant during treatment. Use an effective form of birth control while you are using this medication. Premarin can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. This medication may also slow breast milk production. Do not use if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not give this medication to anyone under 18 years old without the advice of a doctor

Is there any form of off label use for it? I can't really see any reason why I would be needing to take it and I don't want to take anything I don't need. (especially something that can affect my milk supply)

Generally, Premarin is given to elevate the symptoms of menopause. FYI, it's a derivative  of a pregnant mares (horse) urine, thus Pre-Mar-In. It's very controversal because  of the way it's collected ...

They said since I've been breastfeeding for 4 months with no issue it shouldn't do anything. I'm going to call and see what it's for though. I remember them saying they prescribed me birth control pills and those are the only non-medicine pills I have. I don't think that's what they do though.

Actually estrogen can cause problems with milk supply.  That's why they don't give the birth control pills with estrogen...just the progresterone only pills when breastfeeding.  I would definately call and ask your doctor more about this before you take it.  I know certain forms of estrogen cause problems with milk supply, I'm not sure if all do.

I have no idea why they gave it to me. I'm not in menopause or anything. They said something about my uterine lining and wanting to do something with it. I can't remember too much. I got told all this under the effects of anesthesia. Could it be because I'm breastfeeding?

According to the website for the drug it is conjugated estrogen tablets.  Apparently it's typically used to treat menopause symptoms.

I don't know which hormone it is (I think you're right that it's Estrogen though), but I know that my MIL takes it for her HRT now that she's in menopause. She says it helps a LOT with the typical side effects of menopause; mood swings, hot flashes, etc....why did they put ou on Premarin?
