Should I go for a D&C

Hi, I had a vaginal u/s on Apr 29th and the doctor said i was 5W6D but the heartbeat was 93. My blood test showed hcg of 5000. I had another vaginal u/s on May 5th and the doctor said there was not much improvement in the growth of the baby and the heart rate was at 91, and my hcg level was around 4900. I was asked to take another blood test on May 7th. The hcg level ha dropped to 4600. I therefore had to take another vaginal u/s as I had seen a little blood and brown color on may 8th. This time the doctor said she could not see a persistent heartbeat. Therefor my doctor has advised me to go for a D&C. I was wondering if I should do so or wait for another week, or get a second opinion. Could someone please help me!!!!!!!!!!

I had a natural miscarriage. The pain was not that bad. I am absolutely fine now.

Actually a natural m/c is healthier for body.  My doctor agreed with my decision to go through a natural one as opposed to being scraped out.  I agree there is always risks with BOTH procedures.  When I said I was doing it naturally - my OB told me how long to expect it to take and if the m/c isn't progressing then I was to come back in and then we would have to do a D&C - but a few days into everything it happened (feels like your going into labor A LITTLE BIT) and it just happens.  I had no problems, and once your finished and the bleeding has stopped you go back to OB and they do a blood test on you to make sure your HCG levels are down to zero - if not, then they will do another ultrasound to see if something is still left.  Your body can do amazing things, and can regonize when things aren't right.  Mine went without a hitch, after i had the m/c I bled for about another week or so and one day it stopped and everything went well.

It's up to you I agree and I'm not trying to make you have a natural m/c (it wasn't easy to go through) but I wanted to make sure your OB isn't pushing certain things on you because my OB said that sometimes certain doctors will push a D&C when your body can take care of it itself.  I guess it also helps when you have a very attentive OB - who still calls me once in a while to check on me and to see if we are pregnant yet LOL.

i would say wait another few days, get more bloodwork done and another ultrasound just to make sure before you decide anything

I'm really sorry to hear you are going through this.I dont think rushing into a d&c is the best option..  I had a natural mc in dec and didnt have any problems.  It was a bit uncomfortable but I felt better letting nature take its course so id never have that "what if" feeling.  Honestly for me the worst part was going in to get my blood drawn each week to make sure my hcg went all the way down(blah took me 3 weeks) On the upside here i am 4 and a half months later and im almost 6 weeks preggo : ) My doctor recomends natural mc whenever possible because you dont run the risk of scar tissue that can cause future complications hacing children and he feels its easier on your body. I wish you the best of luck!!  I know how hard it is to go through a loss, youve just got to take it one day at a time and keep in mind that when the time is right everything will fall into place.

My doctor says that a natural m/c may lead to hemorraging or infection, and therefore advised a D & C. This is my first pregnancy. Therefore I do not know what to do or expect.

I was also leaning towards a natural m/c. I want to wait it out for another week.  I also forgot to mention I am on progesterone supplements. I only forgot ( more likely due to the sadness of the news from my doc) to take it yesterday. It has begun to bleed again now. I have also seen a blood clot. I am awaiting my doctor's opinion on whether I should continue progesterone supplements or not. Forgive me if I am rambling or not making sense. I am thoroughly confused right now.

I agree with hopefulmommy - I would wait and see.  The brownish clolored blood is actually normal - I would almost wait it out until my bleeding was heavy and red and coupled with severe cramps.  Have you ever thought of doing a natural m/c?  I did that instead of a D&C and it went well - it hurt, but I was in the comfort of my home when the m/c happened with my fiance who helped me.

Anyways - something to think about - and yes please wait or get another opinion!

Your HCG dropping is not a good sign. Either is the heartrate dropping/stopping. I had some brown spotting before the ultrasound that diagnosed my missed miscarriage. You could go for another ultrasound but I don't think the outcome is going to change. Sorry to be so blunt but I went through a miscarriage diagnosed by ultrasound, and really wouldn't have wanted any "false" hope posts to make it harder then it is. Sorry you are going through all this.

I have seen too many stories about this, and I would get another opinion first. Too many women have said they were advised to get a d & c, and decided to wait and now have healthy babies or children.
