Stupid insurance companies!!

So, I'm on another message board, and we have a friend there who has suffered 3 consecutive miscarriages, constituting infertility. As a result, her doctor wants to do IUI with injectibles. The insurance company denied her claim of infertility because she has gotten pregnant within the last 12 months. They see infertility as the inability to become pregnant within 12 months, not the inability to carry, which is absolutely ridiculous. So, this cycle, she has been paying out of pocket for her medications and the procedure. She goes tomorrow. She told us she's paid $280 for 2 days of meds plus $40 for the hcg trigger shot.

We feel so bad for her. We've set up a fundraiser for her to try and offset the cost of her medication and the procedure. If we reach the goal, she gets a check for the amount raised. If we don't, then no one has to pay anything. We have until June 8.

I just wish there was more we could do for her. I'm going to send her a $100 money order on Friday. Has to be a money order because I'm in a different country than she is.

Anyway, just a rant. Wish us luck that we can raise the money in time to help her offset the cost, and so she can finally hold her precious baby!!

Thanks. I just hope we can raise enough in time. I'm think that if we get to the last day and we haven't made it, I'm going to pledge whatever is left just so she can get it. I hope it won't come to that though. I hope we can get enough people on board.

i think it's retarded that ins companies go against what dr's say, just so they don't have to pay out more.....now, if someone in their company has that issue, they're gonna feel stupid....
and that's awesome that you guys are helping her.....

Congratulations on getting to hold your daughter soon. We cannot wait until this girl gets to her baby too. I'm very glad that I don't live in the US. I don't know if OHIP covers fertility treatments or not though. I haven't yet had to take that step. My last two pregnancies ended in miscarriage, and this one seems to be working. I just hope it continues.

I hate insurance companies as well.  Unfortunately what your friend is going through is not uncommon in the US.  My insurance does not cover ANY fertility treatments.  I've had to pay for mine all out of pocket (from oral meds to injectibles to IUI, plus all of the doctors visits).  So now I have a pretty large amount of debt built up since it took us 6 years to conceive.  However, I am now 31 weeks pregnant, and once I hold my daughter in my arms, it will all be worth it!
