Terrible Week - Bleeding at 26 weeks

Hi All

Havent been here in a while as have spent most of this last week in and out of hospital.

Tuesday i started to have Braxton Hicks and at night i noticed a little cramping around dinner time and after a bowel movement i noticed ALOT of bright red blood in the toilet and clotting on wiping.

I phoned the maternity hospital and they said to put a pad on and wait an hour (AS IF) but me and my parents went straight through there and then.

After spending 3 hours in L&D they sent me home after a speculum examination and said it was probably internal haemorroids. They took urine samples and said i have large blood amounts and lucocytes in my urine.

Relieved i left and went to bed.

Wednesday morning i woke and went to get re3ady for work but when i went for a wee i noticed i was bleeding, and again, it was unclear where it was coming from. I phoned my midwife who sent me straight to my GP who gave me a rectal examination (sorry if TMI)

He said there was no evidence of rectal bleeding or any haemmoroids and that i should go home and rest and contact my midwife if anything else happened.

I left and around tea time i went to the loo and noticed more pinkish spotting. I phoned my midwife who told me to go to triage at the maternity hospital right away as she was worried i was threatening labour,

I did as she said and went through only to be admitted overnight.

They checked my urine and said it appears i have 1+ Protein 1+ lucocytes and trace blood so possibly a urine infection but this wouldnt explain the bleeding.

Thursday night i was discharged and told to come back 9am Friday for an emergency scan and cultured tests???

I went home and after another bowel movement noticed yet more bleeding, again it was unclear where it was coming from as it was all over the tiolet bowl and in between my legs.

Arrived at triage at 9, scan was fine placenta is not low and baby is growing well (head circumference of 24.6cm)

Waited 5 hours to be seen by a doctor only to be told there is no obvious cause for the bleeding (could be haemorroids could be irratation on the cervix????) and that as my obs were good that i could go home on the condition i return if the bleeding returns.

So im confused!

Could this be haemorroids??? If so why was there so much blood??

I have so many questions and noone could give me any answers it appears its just "one of those things"

I wasnt straining and it wasnt painful at all.

I was moreso worried because there were clots on the tissue. I have no idea what it was but there was a HUGE amount of blood on two occassions.

Im still using the supposetries just incase it was haemorroids but due to my IBS i can go a week maybe more without needing a number 2 (sorry if TMI lol)

It COULD be hemroids or hair lines tears of the anus.  I too have experienced bleeding during a bowel movement and this has happened to me off and on for years.  Was there any straining during the bowel movement?  Was it larger than normal...I know, gross, but all these factors could contribute.

Next time you have a bowel movement pay real close attention.  Wipe your bum first and see if there is blood...then wipe in front, being careful not to touch too far back to see if there is blood in the front.  Some women DO have unexplained bleeding during pregnancy and as scary as it is, so long as baby is doing fine all should be well.  But like you did, anytime you are uncertain...run to that hospital..as long as you get peace of mind, that's all that matters.

i'm so sorry hear that you are going through all this and i know that it will be a very stressfull time for you. I had vaginal bleeding at 6 wks and two lots of bleeding at 13 1/2 wks (30th dec and 31st) I was addmitted into hospital on 30th december when i went to a+e and was addmited to the ward.I stopped bleeding that first night but the hospital kept me in just to be checked on. Early new years eve morning i went to the toilet (i had to pee in a jug) there was no urine there just pure bright red blood. I shouted the nurse straight away and then i collapsed onto the corridor floor and it took the nurse a while to bring me round. I had an internal done again straight away and the doctor thought i was misscarrying. An emergency scan was booked for me on new years eve and my little one was ok. It took me 4 wks to get over it all because i was in soo much pain and i was too scared to move some days. sometimes now i still get a little scared when it comes to wipeing myself after i've been to the loo just incase there is anything there. I hope you get well soon and please keep us posted.

I havent had any bleeding since thursday night (Thank God) but if it happens again il be sure to ask.

Midwife says to try cover myself when wiping at one end or the other BUT its kinda hard to remember when youre half asleep and stumbling to the toilet at 6am.

Hoping this is the end of the trauma and the rest of this pregnancy will pass by quickly without any mishaps though :)

Thats definitely scary!  Since this happens a lot when you use the restroom, prehaps you could ask your midwife if you could try inserting a clean tampon into your vagina (Probably not all the way up, in case that irritates the cervix) every time before you go, and then remove it a few mins after you have urinated or had a bowel movement.  Any blood on the tampon would mean the bleeding is vaginal and blood in the toilet and NOT the tampon means its coming from the urethra or the rectum - this would be a good way to identify where the bleeding is coming from.  That being said, check with your midwife or doctor to make sure there isnt a problem with doing this during pregnancy.
