corpus luteum cyst

Hi Ladies,

did any of you ever experience corpus luteum cyst pains?  if so can you described what you felt?

2 days ago i was throwing up violently and from that point on, i was having dull pains in my right side of my stomach.  the nurse said she though i pulled a muscle from throwing up so hard.  and now 2 days later, the pain has subsided some but still there.  now it is felt in the middle of my right side down to my right pelvis area.  my corpus luteum cyst is also on that side.  the nurse now thinks it may be that acting up.  it is not very painful, just more ackward and annoying.

thanks,

leighanne

the corpst luteum is just the "egg" or follicule that has been released, then it is called the corpus luteum. Yes it sustains the pregnancy at first but every woman who is ovulating has a corpus luteum and if it does not turn into a baby it is a cyst that will be there till yoru period or sometimes the next then rupture like it does any time. It only hurts when it gets bigger and stays longer. Usually they only hurt when they are about to rupture adn once they do you can have pink watery stuff and have severe cramps and your period starts. They are nothing to worry about at all and are fluid filled. I have heard of dr telling woman that they need to have them removed if they get big enough but you don't and best not to cuz it casues scaring. I have never had one beign pregnant but I can see how painful that would be with the pressure of the growing uterus! They do tend to get bigger when yu are pregnant as your body is not having the estorgen release to start your period so they just keep getting bigger. You will not have a period till they rupture when you are not pregnant. Some woman have many that form every month. They give you symptoms of pregnancy and are also more common with woman who have PCOS and are taking birth control or who have had their tubes tied. Hope you feel beter and yest they are painful!!!! I think worse sometimes then normal contractions myself!

Hi there,

I know this is a really old post. But I have just recently experienced my first luteal cyst. It is very small, under 2 cm and it is on my right ovary. I didn't experience ANY symptoms at all for the first month. I went 52 days long for my cycle when I am like clockwork every 26 to 27 days with 1 day of a heavy bleed and 3 days of a light bleed. Every few months I get bad cramping but that usually only lasts for the first heavy day of my cycle.

Then into the second month I started to have pregnancy symptoms. My nipples turned darker, the montgomery bumps on them were more pronounced, I had bloated a great deal (way more than my regular PMS symptoms as I suffer from PMS), I was feeling nauseated, and I felt pressure.

I went to my doc and he ruled out pregnancy and he also ruled out any type of infection in my bladder or my kidneys. So I waited a few weeks longer and I STILL hadnt gotten my period and I took another HPT and it was negative so I said screw this I'm going to the hospital!

So after waiting there over 12 hours and calling in sick to my work, they found a very small ovarian cyst that they said would go away when I got my period and I got it a week later (yesterday) and all my pregnancy symptoms went away about the same time I went to the hospital, or a few days later.

Now to answer any questions anyone may have about the reason I had pregnancy symptoms - I was told that the luteal cysts are formed because either you are trying to ovulate and then the follicle doesn't mature enough and the egg is stuck so a cyst forms OR you DO ovulate and the follicle hasnt washed away as it is supposed to 12 to 14 days after it forms; thus resulting in a corpus luteal cyst.

The reason that I had pregnancy symptoms was because the corpus luteum is what sustains the pregnancy with the hormones for the first 10 weeks of any pregnancy. So with the cyst being there, it was producing the hormone that the corpus luteum is supposed to which in turn tricked my body into thinking that it was pregnant which resulted in the symptoms I described.

Most cysts will go away on their own, however, it may take some time. My period has been very heavy and very painful with a combination of passing the cyst and with not having a period since january 31st, almost 2 months late.

I hope I helped anybody with questions on a luteal cyst!

i had that at the beggining of my pregnancy and i dont know how many time i ended up in the er thinking i was misscarrying....to me it felt like a very very very bad period..and it was just on one side....they gave me atasol 30 for it..sence it was only early....they kept checking to make sure it was gone on u/s....it went away when i was around 9 weeks or so...9 times out of ten it resolves itself when the placenta takes over..just be careful cuz they can keep growing and get bigger and more painful...im sure your doc will keep following up with you!!! Good luck hun and sorry your having the annoying pain...i know how bad it is as i have had two surgerys on my overys b4 for cyst the size of grapefruits!! I hope you feel better soon hun!

mea- most women have corpus luteum cysts, it is what produces progesterone for the baby and it dissolves away after a few months but sometimes they can cause some discomfort.  the US tech should tell you which ovary yours in on.

michele katy- i took 2 tylenol last night and it seemed to help.  i notice that it starts to act up more the more i move around and do things.  i just need to rest which is such a hard thing for me to do because i always want to be doing things.

Oh no, you're not crazy.  Tylenol is safe to take while pregnant, so if it becomes too bad, keep that in mind :)

tia- i will stay on top of it.  thank you for your comments.  the pain has subsided some so now it is only like once every few hours and it is very dull so i am not as worried.  I do have another US on 8/11 where they will measure that cyst again though.

michele, katy- that is kind of how i am feeling.  at least i feel a little better that i am not the only one who has had this so i do not feel crazy.

I had one of those cysts with my last 2 pregnancies I know for sure.  And at times, it became pretty painful.  It felt like someone was squeezing my ovary!!!

tia- thank you for your response but it has been looked and it is the corpus luteum cyst, the one that produces the progesterone.  it is normal size but the nurse said sometimes it can cuase slight discomfort for some women.  like i said, it is not painful, just dull cramping that comes and goes.

That sounds more like a dermoid cyst on the ovary i had one that was painful its called torsion, and those cyst get very big fast!!!!! I had 2 have mine remove in May it had gotten to be 11cm.  It also caused me to have a miscarriage, get a second opinion on that cyst,i went for years with the cyst being misdiagnosed. Dermoid cyst are the ones fueled by protein and can have hair, teeth, bones in them!!!!
