high beta hcg for wk 8 since LMP

today i got a call from my drs office saying my beta hcg level of 243,000 was through the roof for being only 8 weeks pregnant.  i looked up charts online, and it didn't seem that far out of the ranges posted for 9-12 weeks.  is this number REALLY that high?  i'm thinking of how great it would be to have twins, but don't want to get my hopes up too high.  i will be getting an ultrasound in 8 days, so i should know for sure soon.

my hcg levels were super high at 5-6 weeks (I dont remember what now) and were quadrupling instead of doubling. Add that to a progesterone of 132 (normal is 15+) and I was CONVINCED I was having twins

Nope. Just one.

If you are 8 weeks they could have done an ultrasound though - much more reliable for dating pregnancy than the numbers.

That is BARELY out of the normal range. I had a level of 32000 which was extremely high for 5 weeks and everything was fine. Also, hcg levels don't really matter that much since the levels can differ so much from person to person the only thing that really matters is that they are going up at least 60% every 48 hours.
