no ammnioitic fluid at 20 wks is there a chance of life for my baby??

I was at the doctor for a procedure sonogram about a month ago, they said my fluid was low and didnt seem to worried I was sent to Wininie Palmer hospital for another sonogram, this one showed that there was no ammnitotioc fluid left at all, the doctor said the kidneys and everything were groing on schedule and the baby seemed to be healthy. But didn't really give any information on the chance of survival?? Will the lungs ever develop without fluid, does my baby even have a chance?

Please let me know what happened. I am in a similar boat with low (2 to 5cm) fluid which I have had since 20 weeks. I am 25 weeks now. Baby growing fine with strong heartbeat but an MRI showed there may be an issue with kidneys. I don't appear to be leaking but on bed rest and drinking tons of water.  Praying hard and trying to stay hopeful but really don't know what to expect.

I'm in the same boat. My water completley broke at 20 weeks. All my doctors and specialists tried to get me to abort, but I couldn't do it because in all of my ultrasounds the baby had a strong heartbeat. I'm now almost 22 weeks and am on bedrest and being monitered closley by my doctors. So far..the baby is still doing great. Hoping I can make it to atleast 24 weeks so if I do go into labor early, the baby will have a chance. Keep faith ladies. I thought for sure and so did my doctors think that shortly after ur water breaks ull go into labor..but that's not always the case. Stay strong, be careful and just belive

Hi Amber,

My daughter is going through a similar situation to yours with no amniotic fluid.  It's very difficult because I always wonder if the doctors are really doing all they can.  Can you please tell me what the outcome was for your baby?

My daughter was in a car accident and her water broke a week ago.  She was 18 weeks pregnant.  The ER said there was nothing that could be done to save the baby and set her up for termination.  My daughter had accepted it at the time but realized later that she can't do it.  We've been to see her reg OBGYN and now an At-Risk Specialist.  Level 2 ultrasound shows almost no amniotic fluid.  She wants to keep trying whatever she can to keep the baby.

a freind of my mom's had this same problem i think she was about 22 weeks....the doc put her on bedrest (in the hospital) and was giving her something to help along the production of fluids....she gave birth at 24 weeks and he was in the hospital for almost 8 weeks in the NICU being monitored....im not positive on all the details but i know whatever the doc had done was very helpful.......i wish you the best of luck and speak to your doc ASAP, keep us posted !!!

LosingMyMindInGA is absolutely correct.  The point of viability where your little one even has a chance of survival is 24wks better at 28wks!  They should have A put you on hospital bedrest where you can be monitored 24hrs, or B bedrest at home with a monitor.  Their 1st course of action should have been telling you to stay off of your feet.  You dont want to do anything that promotes contractions or leaves you open to infection.  The baby needs the fluid for lung development which usually doesnt even start until wk32.  He/she also needs the fluid to keep the cord free from compression and wrapping around the neck or body.
I in no way want to scare you just educate you.  Please speak to your OB ASAP, and if he doesnt seem too concerned find someone that is.  I would hate to hear that an avoidable accident may have taken place b/c of carelessness or lack of concern.  Take better care of you and that little one.  Please keep us updated!

oligohydramniosis is not to be taken lightly.  with my first pregnancy they monitored my fluid very closely becuase I was always on the very low end of normal.  I was fortunate enough to be at term when I stopped producing any fluid and had an emergency c-section.  You need to ask your doctor specifically is there actually NO FLUID or just a very little.  Ask him/her what his course of action is going to be.  If you are not satisfied with the answers, find a different doctor.  Are they sure your water hasn't broken or been leaking?  Don't sit back and wait for the doctors....MAKE them give you answers, this is your childs life they are piddling around with.

Is there something they can give you to increase your fluid? Because if not your baby probably will not make it. Every woman I have heard of who had low or no fluid... well, they didn't have their babies. Ugh, I feel so awful for saying this but I don't want to beat around the bush.

You know I really don't know everything anyway. Your best bet is to do some research and keep talking with your doctor. If they seem unconcerned, get a different doctor. I know a woman whose daughter just lost her baby at 7 months pregnant for this reason.

*HUGS* Please oh please let us know anything!

I have heard of babies with no amniotic fluid having to have transfussions through the umbilical cord. You may want to find out more details from your Dr and ask him what he proposes to do. I wouldn't think the baby could survive without fluid. I could be wrong, but I personally would be on the phone right now to find out.
