its really best to stop smoking or atleast try and quit as early in the pregnancy as you can, its bad and unhealthy for the baby but ive never smoked so i cant say how hard it is to stop. maybe talking to someone to help you quit depending on how far into the pregnancy you are some health care people say its best to carry on if your really far into the pregnancy as it could cause more damage due to the baby being used to it. but it can cause so many complications later down the line or even at birth for your child.. its not good for any child whos growing to be around smoke outside of the womb never mind inside, just try your best to limit it as much as possible if you cant quit or its too late, good luck :-) x x

yeah but when has studies have ever shown pure truth.  look at everyone that commented on this that has a child or children and look at how many have been affected.  I don't believe studies cause its just someone way to scare us.  look they are trying to relate apples to cancer now becaus of studies.  basically everything hurts us now a days. its best to listen to your doctor then what other people say because everyone has there own views and your doctor has the experience and will know wwhat's goood for you and your baby.  doctors are there for a reason.

Basically to sum up everyone, no its never safe to smoke during pregnancy and around children (or anyone for that matter) but its a big step from smoking a pkg. Find the strenght to stop completly, seek help even, because if your not going to do it for yourself do it for your baby. No one should ever tell you its safe to smoke.....i mean they even put those discusting pictures on the pkg. So even the company is telling its not safe

I quit cold turkey once that test came up positive. I was about 5 weeks. The reason why quitting so sudden can be bad is because of stress. Many people smoke as a stress reliever. And once you cut out your only stress reliever you start stressing out really bad which is bad for baby.

I just want to throw out there, that your pre-pregnancy weight says nothing about how much your baby will weigh. Weighing 100lbs pre-pregnancy does not mean all women will have a 5lb baby. I weighed 98lbs pre-pregnancy and at 36 weeks my baby is already over 5lbs.

The reason people refer to studies is because they are far more reliable and representative of the population as a whole as opposed to just one person. Good or bad, the answers you get from one person are not reliable, it could be from either extreme. Use google scholar and research the information, from what i've seen it is not safe to smoke any amount during pregnancy, at the very least you are reducing the amount of oxygen and blood flow that goes to the placenta. you can also  find research indicating the best way to quit. Just research the information from a reputable source (academic jounal or .org site) and make an informed decision based on the facts. Good luck momma!!

I quit cold turkey with my son (but I was a lot younger and hadn't been smoking as long) and with this one I gradually cut down. There are obvious risks associated with smoking while pregnant although not every child is affected I would not be able to forgive myself if my child was. I know a girl who smokes a pack a day and drinks "a glass" (her glass and everyone else's glass are veeeerrry far apart) of wine a day and a 6 pack on the weekends and her son is perfect this far (she's about 30 weeks). And then others are not so lucky. It is your decision to make. I know that quitting is really hard and if it causes too much stress a doctor will tell you to continue but if at all possible I would quit. And if you want to quit there are free programs that will help you. Wish you the best

I didn't know that, I didn't even think about quitting I just did. But I guess the baby experienced 5 Weeks of it then boom it just went. Will keep that in mind if I start smoking again then! in regards to smoking and pregnancy it's down to the mother what they wish to do though I think. Ask a normal smoker to give up and it's hard enough but being pregnant I bet it's harder with all the added emotions.

@Ashdub I'm not saying your downing people I am saying there will be people that see this post and will have no problem downing people.   honestly I think a small smoking addiction is better then others.  I have a very immature sister who could care less about her children.  in the last 3 years she's been pregnant 4 times and each time she smokes weed and drinks and wonders why her baby dies unfortunetly at 20-30 weeks.  smoking three or so a day is not that bad.  I've heard smoking is bad around babies and children and I'm very anal on that.  I won't let anyone smoke infront of my kids.  we don't smoke inside and safes part is we wear these weird looking poncho things while we smoke if we are going to be near our kids after so when we take it off its not on our clothes and wash our hands.  there are precautions people can take if yiu can't quit

And I guess what get me is that most think it's just about birth weight when it's not like my daughter will forever have severe asthma because of me and every time she goes to the ER from school and has to be treated I kick myself for it. I don't judge anyone. I'm just telling the other side of the story too

I stopped the second  found out I was pregnant without a thought in all honesty, and having had any cravings either and I had been smoking for 13 years. My partner is meant to be giving up as the midwife told him that once baby here even a few hours after a cig then holding the baby it would still harm it. I wish he would stop now in all honesty as any kind of smoke is dangerous for the baby

Oh I know and I was a pack a day smoker with my kids and quit FINALLY after years of trying. It's not safe to cold turkey it for sure during pregnancy. I don't down people who smoke during pregnancy and I normally don't comment on these posts but she asked "is it safe?" we'll no, it's not safe but it's better than chain smoking.

I'm not saying that.  obviously its not good but its her decision to do what she wants.  hearing everyone's experiences help.  I'm sick of people downing people because they don't quit when the only know what "studies" say they don't know what real people have to say.  smoking is completely up to what you want to do and yes there are risks but not to all.  if you ask most doctors they will tell you what percent of children actually are affected.  both my doctor obgyn and peditrician all said every 1-10 children are affected to smoking during pregnancy.  with my daughter I was young and went through a lot of stress and yes with her I smoked about a pack a day obviously limit yourself and don't do that.  this is a very touchy topic on here and don't let people who will be commenting bother you as this is your child not there's.  any words said to me I just ignore

I smoked no more than 3 a day for a few months while I was pregnant. I'm 37 weeks and quit completely 3 weeks ago. My baby is small for 37 weeks, 5lbs and 15oz. She still had time to gain more weight tho. Everything else they can check thru ultrasound says she's fine, so hopefully that's the case

Just because your kids are ok doesn't mean everyone who smokes kids will be obviously because my oldest is not and my youngest is fine . We need to give support and facts but can't say oh your baby will be fine cuz mine were fine! Otherwise there wouldn't be warning labels on packs of cigarettes saying pregnant women shouldn't smoke

I smoked with all. my daughter was born at 37.6 and weighed 7.12  my son was born at 37 and weighed 7.14.  this one is already measuring at 6.5 pounds and I'm only 35 weeks.  my doctor doesn't want me to fully quit because it could cause stress on baby so I just keep it low.  I was a pack a day smoker but while pregnant maybe 3-5 a day

it doesnt just cause ur baby to have low birth weight. smoking has been linked to an increase in child asthma, skin disorders, risks for developing diabetes and types of cancers in childhood!!!

I smoked with my last pregnancy and my daughter weighed 5lb7oz but my doctor told me ahead of time she would probably be small because I only weighed 100 lbs when I got pregnant. And im 33 weeks with my son and I've smoked this whole pregnancy also but I don't get another ultrasound so I'm not sure how much he weighs
