PK, I am not advocating doing this, just giving you and everyone else info.

You do NOT have to sign the consent form for a C/Section.  They CANNOT do one on you without your consent.  If you tell your doctor ahead of time that you will not have a scheduled section, he will drop you like a hot potato, if he doesn't do VBACs.

They can't drop you in labor--that's patient abandoment.  They will haul out the big guns and tell you that you are killing your baby and yourself, but that's not true.  They cannot force you to undergo surgery.

Your husband would probably leave you, though!  That's another issue entirely.

You sound pretty undecided.  It would be good to talk to another OB about it, but actually it is getting harder and harder to find a doctor who VBACs anymore.  NOT ONE of the docs at our hospital will VBAC.  The only time we have one, is if someone comes in too late to get to the OR, which is, in my opinion, a crime.

But IF someone truly and desperately wanted a VBAC, all she would have to do is to come in in labor and refuse the C/Section.  Yes, the doc will be mad and bluster about the huge risks, but in the end they have no choice in the matter.  They cannot do surgery on anyone without their consent.

So get another opinion if you really are strongly considering it.  You might be surprised that someone else would easily agree with it.  Worth looking in to.  The risks really are very slight, and the risk of surgery is probably not much lower.

After reading all the comments here, I am now COMPLETELY freaked out about giving birth....All this talk of killing people, ripping, so much pain ect...Way to freak me out guys! Thanks...   :)

Since everyone is asking what's available, is it possible to do it 50's style where they knock you out, deliver your baby and hand it to you when you wake up along with your 4:30 martini?  Anyone know a DR who'll do that? I'm willing to travel. really.

I talked about this with my OB, since I had a c-section with my son.  If your Dr won't do it, it really isn't a question.  My Dr. is game.  He said that the risk of uterine rupture is slight anyway, and actually higher at the beginning of labor, NOT the end when you are pushing.  The question is, why did you have a c-section with the first one?  A "good candidate" for a VBAC is someone who had a breech baby, or someone that progressed (didn't stall during labor) and then had a c-section.  A bad candidate is someone who failed to progress.  It doesn't hurt to look into it.

lol i love my dr.  he has delivered my sis 2 kids plus has done numerous surgeries on her, plus my moms hysterectomy last month and he is great.  he has delivered several of friends kids and another hyst. on my best friend.  i do trust him, i was just curious.  as my day progressed i began to think why , the pain of pushing out and ripping is more than i want to deal with.  it was hormones and the baby shows where they make it seem so easy.  im wishy washy today and i guess ill just wait till my dh comes home.  he really doesnt want me to try, he is afraid.  thanks for listen to me ramble, yet again.

could you just get a second opinion on a vbac on the DL (not that you NEED to do it that way, but it sounds like you are reluctant with your current doc) w/o your OB knowing.  The info you get from that may dissuade you from even wanting one.  If it persuades you and to do it, then you could take the steps to change OBs or at least approach yours about your wishes and let him/her decide how to handle a referral or change of OBs etc.  I have had two vag and YOU'RE CRAZY GIRL...!!!!!!!!  LOL  I've said it b/4 and I will say it again:  If I had a vag delivery now, I would request the epidural be inserted in about the seventh month and I would take one TO GO TOO!!!

I don't see why you couldn't get a second opinion. My niece had a c when she had her daughter 4 years ago and she just had her son Nov 06 and had him natural as can get. Her doctor let it be up to her, but also said that if things go wrong at any point she could change her mind. If I get pregnant again I want to do a water birth, have heard wonderful stories about them.
