amniocentesis test question

I am 35 and I'm 5 weeks. I'm so excited because I was told I couldn't have children. But everyone wants me to have the amniocentesis test done and I read that normally your pregnancy is 1 in 400 of having a miscarriage but after the test is done your chances go to 1 in 200 of having a miscarriage.  I'm torn because I wasn't to do what is best for the baby but I don't want to lose this baby either.  This is my miracle baby! Please I need help making this decision on getting the test done or not.

I did the ultrasound with no signs. The doctor did a sample of blood from finger tip to figure out odds but told me if there isn't family history then not much to worry about. Had no need to test further. Im 35

I'm 35 and decided not to have the amino. It wasn't worth the risk to me, but like someone else said, that's just my opinion. Just don't let anyone else talk you into doing something you are uncomfortable with.

Congratulations! I'm also 35 and after four and a half years of trying I'm about 4 weeks and 4 days pregnant.

It's completely natural to be fearful and worried about these things but I'll tell you something and Mexico in Egypt plenty of women give birth well into their forties and they don't go through the amniocentesis test and 90% of them come out just fine. That much older ages and we are

If you plan on having they baby regardless why worry yourself?  I opted for no tests,  just my opinion though.

Trps68 I know exactly how you feel I'm 40 and this is my second child and I am so very very torn about that decision as well. I  did the blood test and it does tell you a lot but the amino Gives a lot more details that the blood test can't give you. My main reasons for taking it is 1st  my age 2nd I am a special education teacher and I've seen every end of the spectrum of disabilities
Even though my blood test was fine I still want to be 100% sure so I can plan accordingly. My Dr actually tried to do a CVS last Friday but due to a new old operation I had years ago she couldn't get through my cervix. I'm saying all of this to let you know that what is to be will be and have faith that GOD will protect your baby and keep it safe, so weigh the pros/cons and do what's best for you and your baby and family.

The blood test option is one choice,  and looking at the baby with a sono also helps.  They can usually either completely rule out Downs with a sono,  or see hard and soft markers that might make an amnio a good choice.

Thanks everyone ♡ that makes me feel a lot better.  I will definitely talk to my Dr about the blood test option.

I agree with the other ladies - have one of the blood tests that is ~95% accurate in detecting chromosomal abnormalities (the panorama and harmony tests are examples of this type of test).  "If" these come back abnormal then the next steps would be discussed with your doctor - note that  a high level ultrasound can be used to detect soft markers for some genetic conditions too.

Who is the "everyone" that is telling you to get an amniocentesis?  Is your dr insisting on this?

I wouldn't do the Amnio or cvs test personally! My MFM Dr told me not to do either and the NIPT is just as accurate, and you will get the sex of the baby early. I did the test twice. One for the Trisomy 21 and Trisomy 18 and one for spina biffida. Both required a 2 week wait, but came back normal. My son will be here soon!!!I turned 36 in June and had a previous loss, so I didn't want to risk miscarriage again. Good luck

I had an amnio with my first pregnancy because I had some soft markers for down syndrome with my ultrasound (one of them being a congenital heart defect) & quad screen. I won't do one again.  I didn't miscarry but I just didn't like it. My results came back positive for down syndrome. I was so stressed the rest of that pregnancy. I'm glad we knew though because it allowed us to be prepared medically.  I had weekly non stress tests towards the end & one of them caught his heart rate dropping. I embedded up being flown to a bigger hospital for an emergency c-section.  None of the Dr's thought he would have survived contractions.  That was 5 years ago.
Now, like the previous poster said, there are genetic blood screenings & more advanced ultrasounds. There are noninvasive tests & you can always decide to do an amnio if you are ever worried about the results of one of those tests.

Miscarriage rates vary also. It's based on the doctors skill. If you are ever considering an amnio, ask the doctor performing it what his success rate is. Mine said he's never had a m/c, and only one patient experienced some fluid leakage but it was resolved and the patent had a healthy baby.

There is a fetal dna test they can do by drawing your blood. It' tests for chromosomal abnormalities and can tell you the gender as well. If is offered after the 10th week and is highly accurate. If you have a positive result, you always can have the amnio if you feel it's nessisary. I've had amnios in 3 of my pregnancies and never any complications from it. They are not as scary or painful as some may think.

I'm 38 and high risk. I had the fetal dna test at 12 weeks and it did come back positive for an extra chromosome with 99% accuracy. I had to wait til 16 weeks for the amnio. That month was awful and full of tears and what if's. That test came back negative. My doctor said he's never seen this as both tests have high accuracy rates. Now it's just wait and see once the baby's born. In hindsight, I wish I would have never had any tests done so I could just enjoy my last pregnancy without worry.

They can do it by a blood test?

Request the blood test. It is not invasive and no chance of miscarriage.
