For a more natural (but equally effective) alternative...you can try ground flax seed and/or rose hips. There are rose hips in my prenatals and that seems to keep things going well. Rose hips also have anti-inflammatory properties, and are high in vitamin C.
Good luck!
I had to use iron supplements for a lot of my pregnancy which can cause bad constipation. I used prunes and Metamucil since my doctor said both were okay. After delivery I was given colace which also worked fine.
I took Miralax for the last 2/3rd of my pregnancy - with my obgyn consent. She was also ok with me taking stool softeners such as olace, 3 a day when badly needed. Once on Miralax I did not need stool softeners anymore.
Give your doctor a phone call, they should tell you what you can use overthecounter by phone.
