How soon can you start trying after a d&c?

It was confirmed Monday that Baby P's heart had stopped beating.  We had seen a strong hb just 2 weeks ago -- we're devastated.  My body doesn't seem to realize that this has happened so I have to go in for a d&c tomorrow.  Does anyone know how long we have to wait to start trying again after the procedure?

Hi there.  This is a very old thread, almost 2 years old.  May I suggest you start a new post?  You may find you get more responses that way.  Just click on post a question at the top of the forum.

I am sorry for your loss.  Sadly miscarriage is common, more common then most realize.  You can start trying to conceive again now.  What are the things you did last time?  I personally used ovulation predictor kits, a product called pre seed and that worked for me.  Good luck!

I think you should just ask your own doctor when you can try to conceive.  Some doctors say no intercourse the first month after a D&C due to risk of infection; others say two weeks, three weeks, etc.  I don't think my RE would have had us take two cycles off of trying to conceive simply for emotional healing, as he is the one saying every month matters so don't delay, etc.  So since there seems to be disagreement on these issues, it's probably best to just ask your own doctor what s/he recommends for you.

My baby's hb stopped at 12wks and I had d&c the following day. I had a follow up appt to be sure cervix had closed 2wks later and was given the green light to ttc immediately. Dr said the main reason other drs say to wait is for emotional healing and for accurately dating the new pg.

I'm sorry for your loss.  I had a d&c and was initally told to wait until my period to try again.  I called up my dr and asked why.  She then told me I could ttc as soon as the bleeding from the miscarriage stopped - so I did.  Just be warned that the "emotional reasons" for waiting can be pretty tough!  But I would find not trying tough too.  I did get pg one period after that and miscarried.  I then got pg again just two weeks later and that one stuck!  My next pg was another miscarriage.  And then I got pg two periods later and that one stuck too.  My most recent pg was a miscarriage and though I did try right away, I didn't get pg that first pre-period cycle and now the RE is making me wait so I can have more testing done.

I am so sorry.  I had a mis in July and had to have a D & C-  I know it is not easy.  I was told to wait two cycles, however I  got pregnant after 1 cycle.  I will be 15 weeks tomorrow :-)

Good luck!

Very sorry to hear!
BGMN is right, two cycles in order to have a good lining.

Take care!

I'm so very sorry for your loss.  We also discovered the heartbeat was gone at a second ultrasound last June.  I'd had no symptoms of a miscarriage, so I had a D&C three days later.  I was told by the ob-gyn surgeon and my RE to wait two complete menstrual cycles before trying again, as you want to have a good uterine lining for an embryo to implant.  It was very hard to wait, but we did, and I got pregnant again the second cycle after trying.  (Sadly, I had another miscarriage in October, but that is almost certainly due to my age, rather than anything about the first miscarriage or D&C.)  After a natural miscarriage, one can start trying right away, so I'm waiting to see if I conceived again this cycle.  A "missed miscarriage" like you've had is really difficult--surround yourself with good things and people you love--thankfully, time and trying again does help heal the loss....
