OPK and HPT - opinions?

I've been reading that some people think you can get a + OPK earlier than a HPT. There are mixed opinions. What do most of you think? I'm 9 DPO today, and just out of curiosity I did an HPT and OPK yesterday. Negative for both. The OPK was completely line-free. Tonight, again out of boredom, I did another OPK...there was a faint line. Also, I'm having AWFUL lower-back pains and pulling sensations in my lower abdomen. Coincidence? Wishful thinking? Argh...this waiting is awful!

In every OPK kit (regardless of brand) there is a chart that tells you which cycle day to start testing.  It's dependant on how long your average cycle is.  For example, I have a pretty consitant 28 day cycle, so I start testing on cycle day 11.  Once you have a positive, you know you will probably ovulate in the next 12 to 36 hours.  There is no real need to test after you receive a positive.  I have kept testing anyway, and found that I have stayed positive for up to 3 days.  I called the manufacturer, as well as read up on this on line.  Its pretty common to have it happen, and you should assume you will ovulate in 12-36 hours from your first positive.  I now know I usually get a positive around day 14, so I start bd'ing around day 12, then every day until day 17 or 18.

how many days does everyone test the OPK?? Do you test until a positive then stop or keep testing till there is a positive????

Many do say an OPK will come up positive when you are pregnant, but its definately not reliable.  I tried it once when I got a BFP on FRER, and the OPK was negative.  Also, keep in mind on an OPK there is no faint line positive.  The second line has to be as dark or darker to be positive.  It's not like an HPT where a faint line is positive.

Only a few more days Tricia, and you will know.  I know, the whole 2WW makes me crazy as well.  Hang in there!!

I was really off with my comment.  I had no clue an OPK would show + when you are pregnant...Huh, I guess I learned something new today!

Don't go by the OPK. I've gone that route. Yes, when you are pregnant an OPK will show positive. Not any earlier than a HPT though. I did the test.. It wasn't until about 3 days past my + HPT did I get a full + OPK.

No, I know what you are talking about, but to what I know and believe.  A OPK can not predict pregnancy. But hang in there, not to much longer intill you are test!

I'm confused...if you are 9DPO, why would you take another OPK?  A  HPT only results in a BFP or BFN after ovulation occurs.  Am I misreading what you are saying, or did I make sense?  A positive reading for an OPK is only when both lines are equal/darker in color.  A faint line is considered negative.  On the otherhand, a faint line that appears on an HPT indicates a positive.  Hope that helps!
