4 mo. pregnant, sore throat relief?

I woke up this morning with a horrific sore throat that I think was brought on my drainage, etc. I took off work the rest of this afternoon and will take off tomorrow to recover as my ears are now starting to hurt. I had a Slurpee and that helped ease the throat pain..until it was gone. Is there anything I can take or do while I'm pregnant? I know my OTC med options are limited.
Any ideas!? Thanks, Heather

First I would make sure you have had no sick contacts? Strep is going around massively where I am from. We see it mainly in the form of sore throat, ears and headache.

Other than that I would call a pharmacy and ask them if they can recommend anything; they will know the drug classes!

Feel better soon!

You can always try decaf tea and honey...

If you want to try something OTC, I agree that you should call the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to help you out weighing your options.

I'm kind of a natural person though when it comes to medicines and OTC stuff...I don't even like to take tylenol during pregnancy because I my doctor and I agree that no medicine is the ideal.  I SUFFERED a major cold when I was 8w pregnant but got through it with decaf tea, lots of liquids and boxes of tissues!

Peppermint tea is wonderful for a mild soar throat. Peppermint is a natural anesthetic which numbs your throat.

If it's not better in a few days you should go to the Dr and make sure it's not Strep.

Throughout my Pregnancy I've had way TOO many sore throats! And like Sweetangel I'm more of a "natural healing" type gal and being Pregnant I didn't want to take any kind of medication, even tylenol. So I basically lived off of Decaf Tea and Soup! Which I don't know where you live but here in CT, it's brrr COLD! So some soup and tea sounds awesome right about now!
I also bought a ton of cough drops and if I didn't have Tea or Soup in my mouth I was sucking on drops, it really helps numb your throat. A hot shower or bath always helped too...the warmth on your chest is really good when your sick.
Popsicles or Italian Ice worked wonders for me too...anything really cold or hot will feel great on your throat. But unfortunately all you can do is rest and try little things like this and eventually you'll start to feel better. It's tough when your Pregnant, your bodys already going through so much! Feel Better!

Thanks for your responses and ideas. I woke up this morning feeling worse than yesterday. My throat is swollen, ears hurt, and head is stuffy. I have an appointment with my family doctor at 3:30 p.m. just to make sure it's not strep. My body is very sore and I feel weak. DH just went to get me some sucrets, popsicles, and soup. I feel bad I've missed a day and a half of work and might miss tomorrow. But I have to get better!

You can also try gargling with warm salt water.  My doctor would ask me what I would normally take if not pregnant, then tell me if it is ok.  I took tylenol cold but non-drowsy - though if I ever noticed a medicine NOT working I would stop it right away because there is no point putting it in my system if it won't work.  But that's good that your going to the doctor, because they can recommend specific meds for whatever symptoms you may have.  Feel better!  I was sick on and off for almost 2 months, it was horrible - especially when it was over Thanksgiving, got better, then got sick again right before Christmas.

UGH poor thing... I know how you feel though.... I was sick about a month ago with a HORRIBLE Soar throat! I took Tylenol SORE THROAT the liquid Version.... it has a cooling agent in it that HELPED sooooo much.... and its safe! it only contains Tylenol and i think like a little bit of MINT in it to create the soothing cooling effect on your throat... it doesnt have all that other antihystamines (sp) or other stuff we preggos are not suppose to have... totally safe! and it helps

Throat spray is fine to use, cough drops, tea with honey, peppermint tea, tylenol are all safe, there may be more but you can ask the pharmacist, they know what you can take in each trimester. Homemade chicken soup really does have medicinal benefits so you could try that.
I hope you feel better, I know how miserable it is to be sick while prego.
