Yes, Avent is now BPA free!
The Avent bottles do leak, but only if the nipple isn't on correctly. Actually almost every bottle will leak in this case. Glass is a good idea if you want to avoid BPA altogether but Born Free is EXPENSIVE! I like silicone nipples ONLY and they're the only ones with silicone ones. I can't remember if theirs are breast-like or not.
You should make a list of what is most important to you (breast-like nipple, BPA-Free, easiest to clean, least amount of parts and pieces, etc.). Whichever bottle has most of the criteria, go with that one!
Well, after lots of research I have learned one thing for sure. Everyone is different and has a different experience with each. Also, pretty much it will be the baby that chooses the bottles. I would only buy one at a time until you find the one that baby likes. Many of the specialty bottles come with their own special nipples and you can't use others with their systems and if baby doesn't like the nipple you are SOL. So many women I know that chose the bottle they thought was best, put it on the registry and got tons of them and baby didn't want anything to do with them! Like formula, bottles are individual and you will only know when baby arrives.
I haven't tried any of them, we didn't do bottles very often but when we did we used Avent and Gerber with my first and I am thinking of switching to glass this time around. Munchkin makes glass bottles that come with silicone covers to help protect them and from what I have read they are VERY durable. I will update in a couple months on how they work!!!
Avent leak if you dont skrew the cap on just right, it is pretty annoying. Gerber were great! The nipples had a bigger base which my son liked since he was used to the breast.
I live by Playtex Drop-Ins. I did with my son and I am with this little princess. I also used Avent with my son, but I too, found that they leaked a bit. Sometimes it was hard to find the right fit when screwing on the lid/nipple. But I love Drop-Ins cause they are easier cleaning. As for Dr.Browns and Born Free... I don't see the point in spending so much money on bottles. It's kind of ridiculous how much people spend on them. But that's just my opinion! :)
im with lance on this one, platex ventaire i started with but i also substitue with the soothie ones because my baby loves them. he loves the pacifier and since the bottle nipples are the same, he loves it.
but the ventaire ones a great, not too many pieces and u have never had leaking problems. the dr. brown ones i used for my lil cousin and they had so many pieces which were hard to clean and they leaked in the pieces werent put on just right.
I'm looking into Nuk bottles (which have orthodontic nipples and very similar to the breast.) Also have heard good things about soothie bottles. They have the same nipple as the newborn "soothie" pacifiers you'll get from the hospital.
I'll probably get a few different ones to try out. I don't think I'm going with avent though, i hear they can leak to easily.
Thanks ladies for all your advice and help on how to chose a bottle! I think I've made my decision, but also had a friend tell me today of a new one i've never heard of, so now got to research that one. Lol...
I didnt read any of the other posts but I know that I used the drop ins and the Dr Browns and I LOVED the docotr Brown bottlles ( with the exception of having to clean all the pieces) But I never had a problem with them leaking.
I originally used Avent....but they leaked for me all the time. I love the Playtex Ventaire bottles..not the drop ins...and they are BPA free.
If you decide to go with Dr. Browns...I have seen them sold at my local TJ maxx stores...a whole box for like $29.99 and I know that they can be pretty expensive. I want to say that it was the starter set or something..but I always see them at TJ Maxx...dont know if you have a local one around you!
I used the glass bottles, the classic ones like when we were all kids. I never broke one!! My son was so hard on them, he would throw them out of the crib, out of the stroller on the street...no breaking!! I dont know what I am going to do this time around. last time the bpa was just hitting the news after i bought avent and I just washed them by hand and didnt put them in the microwave, and switched between them and the glass. I liked the wide mouth of the avent so much better. much easier to clean and put formula in. I noticed in looking this time around 90% of the packages say bpa free. I think I am going to find a bpa free wide mouth bottle this time. I looked into the born free last time and they were $15 each!!! That seemed crazy to me! Especially since you generally need to buy two whole sets in one year! (4oz and 9oz) Has anyone used them and found that $15 per bottle was well worth it?
Awna....ya know I was just thinking about them breaking easier. I wonder if they do?? I am going to look into that. I mean they are after all glass, right? Once the baby learns to hold the bottle, they are clumsy...my son is 13 months and still just drops it where he wants and bangs it onto the table. lol. Maybe that wouldn't be the best way to go. But I am not sure.
I may try Avent brand this time as well. (I like to try a few different ones to see which one baby will adapt to best) I have always heard good things about them. My son was breastfed up until 7 weeks ago, and he never had a problem with the bottle or nursing and I introduced a bottle at 2 weeks. (mainly for long trips or if daddy wanted to feed)
JoyRenee---Do they have BPA free Avent bottles now?? I used Avent with my first and loved them but don't want to reuse the ones I have.
I use Avent all the way. I know more people who had gas/reflux problems with DR Brown as opposed to those that used Avent.
Avent has a breast-like nipple and going back-n-forth between breast and bottle is a breeze.
Good luck choosing!
I know they aren't on your list, but I like the Breastflow bottles by Soothie. If you are nursing they are supposed to be the closest thing the your breast in bottle form. They have two nipples- one that makes baby suck and another that makes him compress- just as he would if he was nursing. We use them for my expressed milk and Mark seems to have no trouble with them.
Kimberlee =] Hahah its so funny the things we ask when its our first. I'm sure I'm going to bother all of you with tons more question before and after its over with =] I'm glad to have you all on here. Yeah I'm leaning with the Dr. Browns too, but then I also heard of BPA...so have you heard any knowledge on that?
Chantal =] Hmm...So you liked the brown's better...okay so about the glass one, I know you haven't used them yet, but do you think they break easy cause if the baby was to throw them?
I went with Dr. Brown's and also the playtex drop-ins. I actually thought they were both great. My son like both, but some days wanted an easier nipple (playtex) and some days was content with Dr. Brown's. We used the Dr. Brown's more often though and I did notice...if you fill it above the line, just a tad, they did leak. And then it took awhile for it to stop because it would get trapped in the lid. But overall, if you do not overfill, they are great. Never had any yellowing to the bottles. I never used the glass, just the plastic. Maybe I will try the glass this time around as it's probably better and over time won't wear out like plastic.
I also had this question, and I ended up chosing the Dr. Brown's ones, I plan to use my breast milk in the bottles, and I've heard the Dr. Brown's are easy to go back and forth from a nipple with.
