They'll ask you if you want formula. And if your baby stays in the room the entire time (which is an option we chose) then you won't have to worry about a nurse accidently feeding the baby formula.
Some parents let their older children witness the birth as well.
The best idea is to go to the hospital's birthing class and/or hospital tour and bring a list of questions like these. Don't feel stupid for asking. You need to know before you go in.
That was my plan; to tell them to not bottle feed the baby, but things can change depending on how everything develops. I had to let them bottle feed my son. I had a c-section and with all the antibiotics they gave me, the doctor told me to wait until I went home to breastfeed. It's a very good idea though to let all your wishes be known. Good luck!
Well, I was going to sign up for the classes but my hospital does not offer that. They do, but is at another hospital or the Y! I'm going to ask my ob doctor and see what he tells me, but like you, my #1 priority is the breastfeeding. Thaks so much.
YES!! Definitely include that. For me, I said no bottles or pacifiers of any kind. They had no problem with that. I included pretty much everything in my birth plan; it was very thorough, yet to the point (if its too long, often the nurses will just skim through it and not really read the details.... mine was just over 1 page, typed). If breastfeeding is important to you, state that in your plan. That was #1 to me, so I made my desires very clear on that.
My hospital provided me with a "tour" of the facilities a few weeks before birth. I was able to ask all kinds of questions about their standard procedures and such (what happens when, whose allowed where, etc...) which made my birth plan easier to write. It was also comforting to visiualize where I'd be during my stay. You may want to see if your hospital does this, or request that they do.
Congrats on your upcoming birth, and I wish you the best!
I didn't have a birth plan, we just played it by ear. I wasn't sure about an epidural but when I was ready for it I let them know. I informed the nurse that I did not want a c-section unless it was absolutely necessary and I told my OB during delivery that I did not want a vacuum or any forceps used, we almost didn't have a choice but we ended up not needing them. When Noah was born they asked me if I was going to be breast feeding, I said yes so they handed him to me so I could nurse him.
If you want one so you feel more comfortable go for it but they will never do anything without asking you first, unless of course, your baby's at risk and there is no other choice.
Good luck!
